To be paid a week early?

My usual pay day is 28th of the month. I spent a fortnight this month 'holding the fort' while my boss was on holiday and due to the nature of my work I consequently spent a lot of time making international calls/using data on my personal mobile (no work phone) so the bill is more than usual and went out this week. And now I've got no money in the bank, have gone over my overdraft and have charges. Full disclosure: I probably over spent too, knowing I'll be getting a bonus on top of wages this month for the holding of the fort. His holiday is annual, so no surprises there.

I asked my boss to pay me yesterday and he said "I'll see what I can do". I replied with the above re: the mobile bill and no response. I don't know how thick I can lay it on over the mobile bill as, while it's a lot more than it usually is, that doesn't actually equal a huge amount of money. Oh, I'll just tell you - it's £101 instead of ~£45. So, £56 wasn't exactly going to see me through the week either Hmm

It's just me and him - he is a sole trader (I think, or self employed?) and his company employs us both. So it's not a monolithic payroll in a massive corporation. It's him clicking about on his biz bank account.

AIBU thinking there's no real reason he can't pay me today?

YANBU to ask for the £ for the phone bill, but yabvu to expect your employer to pay you a week early because you have overspent!

It's a combination of the two... so which is more U? Grin

YABU I'm afraid.
You should ask for your expenses to be reimbursed straight away, but the rest isn't his problem. You should also ask for him to provide you with a phone if it is expected you need to use one for work purposes.

If he pays you early this month. who's to say you won't have overspent next month too and then a difficult precedent might have been set.

Do you know the cashflow of the business? Maybe he can't pay you a week early because he's waiting for funds to come in. Even when I worked in large organisations, I didn't receive expenses early just because I'd incurred the costs earlier iyswim

It's less UR to ask about the extra money for the phone bill being paid early but as you said 56 isn't going to see you through to next week. Hmm, what if you asked for the phone bill and the bonus in advance? That doesn't seem too UR.

Onesleeptillwembley · 22/08/2014 13:13

You wouldn't have a clue if there's a reason for him not to pay you today.

googoodolly · 22/08/2014 13:13

Did you ask him if he'd reimburse you for all the phone calls?

YABU to expect him to pay you early, though. Not all businesses just have cash lying around to pay people, he may have it arranged so the wages don't come in until just before you're expected to get paid.

GreenPetal94 · 22/08/2014 14:10

You cannot expect him to pay you a week early. It would mess up the tax, accounts etc.

However you can ask him to refund the expenses of the phone bill ASAP.

chubbyhez · 22/08/2014 14:23

Oh dear! He's under no obligation toppay you early and you need to discuss expenses and the arrangements before running up a claim.

YABU to ask him to pay you early, but you should be claiming those expenses back for the phone calls, I would expect the same if I was expected to make work-related calls on my personal mobile - I wouldn't do it if I was expected to foot the bill myself.

If he's just back from holiday he might not have the cash either. YABU.

YABU to ask for your pay a week early just because you over spent, however you may or may not be being unreasonable to ask for the expenses on the mobile to be paid straight away. It depends what the usual policy is, even if small businesses there are days where you go through and do all the admin for the business accounts and pay outs for expenses.
