I paid my council tax slightly late this month and they have passed on my "debt" to a third party. This is v annoying, will it bugger up my credit rating? Particularly pissed off as I have never actually missed a payment or had any arrears and now I look like a total dodger!!!!!

How late is 'late'?

gamerchick · 18/08/2014 11:08

But council tax you have till the end of the month to pay it so it shouldn't be late yet? Or are you late paying lasts month?

deakymom · 18/08/2014 11:09

call the third party and tell them its a mistake? you have paid after all
i got a "pink" letter after i had paid i just ignored them to be fair how do they expect you to pay on the 1st when you don't get paid till the 5th! i dont think it should be considered late till the following month especially considering the fire brigade is the only reliable service we have the police are always late the council lose our money the bin men are optional the list is endless!

mine was a pink letter for not paying £12 as that was my contribution at the time i had actually paid it on the first but they had an issue with their payments and it claimed i was "late" now it is £133 i pay but dh gets paid every four weeks so its tricky to work out some months

I have never actually missed a payment

if it was late then technically it was missed. Direct debit will prevent this in the future.

The council won't give a monkeys what date you're paid deaky - the debt falls due when it falls due - not when it's convenient for you to pay it. Imagine if everyone took that approach - pay it when they can - how will the council pay their workers?

My council now gives us the choice of several days of when to pay our council tax I think they realised that just because council employees get paid on the 15th of every month not everybody does! But the annoying thing about council tax is if I,m late paying it they come down like a tonne of bricks but in my last property they had placed me in the wrong band and I overpaid for thirteen years I got a random cheque from them and they just didn't take the arranged direct debit for twelve months to pay me back no letter of explanation or anything!!
