To wonder what was going on in McDonald's carpark

Me and Dp were grabbing a quick drive thru McDonald's this lunchtime while ds napped in the backseat of our car.

We were parked in the carpark with a large van next to us (taking up 3 spaces!)

There were three men sitting in the front seat, not eating, just sitting.

After about 5 mins, 3 members of McDonald's staff came out carrying large clear boxes filled with ice. They loaded the van with these boxes and went back for more, then put these boxes in the van too.

One of the men in the front seat opened the side of the van to reveal the 6 boxes of ice in the back, then shut the van up and drove off.

It was all a bit odd! It wasn't a refrigerated van, what could the reason for the ice be?

MI6 wanting Mcflurries hidden in the ice?

howdoimakehimnoticeme · 16/08/2014 17:16

Ice bucket challenge on Fb for cancer research?

RedToothBrush · 16/08/2014 17:17

There is a new drug craze involving ice and McDonalds staff are dealers.

Special Branch using brain freeze as a form of torture?

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 16/08/2014 17:18

First rule about ice club is don't talk about ice club.

wowfudge · 16/08/2014 17:19

Another branch had a shortage of ice?

Smilesandpiles · 16/08/2014 17:20

There's a heatwave coming and we're not to know about it?

ziggiestardust · 16/08/2014 17:20

MI6 is the only rational answer here, clearly.

Smilesandpiles · 16/08/2014 17:21

I know!

They're going to chuck the ice in the Eurostar vents to see if they will stall in the tunnels again.

melonribena · 16/08/2014 17:21

Love all the ideas!! It was so random! By the time they would have driven somewhere it would surely have melted!!!

Smilesandpiles · 16/08/2014 17:23

This is MI6, they were probably just around the corner, hidden in the bushes.

wowfudge · 16/08/2014 17:25

Wouldn't have melted here today OP.

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 16/08/2014 17:27

Penguin rescue?

doziedoozie · 16/08/2014 17:29

For a wedding? The races? Bday party? New restaurant? Music festival? What was going on that day in the area?

riverboat1 · 16/08/2014 17:30

Maybe the boxes were made to look like they were transparent and had ice inside, but it was a cunning disguise and they were actually full of cash? It's a new form of security when transporting money to the bank?

Hassled · 16/08/2014 17:30

I know two relevant things about MacDonalds and ice:

  1. For a corporate machine, they're remarkably generous about giving away free ice to charity functions - BBQs where you need to keep the wine cold, that sort of thing. I have acquired MacDonald's ice on several occasions.
  2. Their ice machines break down a lot. I've been referred on to other branches sometimes.

So either they're giving ice to branch down the road with broken machine, or there is one hell of a charity function in the offing.

OldLadyKnowsSomething · 16/08/2014 17:31

There is a new fad amongst the young 'uns for pouring buckets of cold, and even iced, water over their own heads while being filmed. They then "nominate" three other friends to do the same...

SweetsForMySweet · 16/08/2014 17:33

Ice baths for athletes.
Scene from Father Ted Lent episode being filmed nearby where the nun was giving Ted & Dougal ice baths!!
Charity fund raising event involving ice
New weight loss programme suggestion on Dr Google

Probably none of these!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 16/08/2014 17:33

Hassled that is both informative and believable.m

Unfortunately also far, far too sensible. Grin

I think they are hiding and transporting body parts.

Smilesandpiles · 16/08/2014 17:34

Someone didn't quite understand a request for Dry Ice?

melonribena · 16/08/2014 17:35

Hassled! I think that's it!

The weather has been dull but warm here today. Wouldn't have melted instantly I suppose!

I love the idea that it was actually cash!

I think it didn't help that the men in the van looked v shifty!

Its the Mafia useing it to get info out of someone in a nearby wearhouse.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 16/08/2014 17:41

There is also a huge thing going around America ATM for ALS/MND (Americans call motor neuron disease something else, A-something lateral sclerosis) where all these celebrities are ice-bucketing themselves, filming it, asking for donations and nominating others. Justin Timberlake, Oprah, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Jimmy Fallon, the New York Jets, etc etc.

Someone upthread said ice buckets for cancer research but is it MND? We are in Canada at the moment and it is all over the place here!

My cousin has MND.

FunLovinBunster · 16/08/2014 17:45

Thanks for the tip about providing ice for charity.

Wh0dathunkit · 16/08/2014 17:54

I've worked in the hospitality industry previously, and the sharing of ice is a fairly common thing - like a "I scratch your back, you scratch mine" thing. We used to have random hotel staff turn up at our big ole ice machines with black binliners to fill them, as long as ours were actually working. I used to get a bit stabby if they took a shedload just as I was pottering off to get a bottle of white from the bar, as it was highly likely there wasn't going to be enough for me to fill an ice bucket for at least a half an hour, which led to grumpy customers at my ver posh hotel.
