to ask a guy at work to shut his mouth when eating

The guy at work next to me eats really loudly with his mouth open. Maybe I'm over sensitive but I really hate bad table mannors. It wouldn't be a huge issue but he snacks quite a lot.

Is there anyway to ask him to eat more civilised without sounding like a bitch?

Tell him his food sounds nice. Maybe he'll get the hint.

sesamej · 01/08/2014 14:25

say it jokily, as per Harolds suggestion. To be honest I'd prefer if someone told me. I would be mortified but glad to be aware of it. If you said it in a not mean way I wouldn't think you were being a dick for bringing it up.

AnotherGirlsParadise · 01/08/2014 14:26

Sounds like my ex - he ate like a malfunctioning cement mixer and was grotesquely loud, and what didn't help was that he was a greedy bastard who was CONSTANTLY fucking eating.

I like HaroldsBishop approach :)

RevoltingPeasant · 01/08/2014 14:27

No you can't.

The only thing worse than having bad manners is pointing out someone else's. Doing it in a passive aggressive way is worse.

HappyAgainOneDay · 01/08/2014 14:28

He won't learn unless you tell him. Could you tell him silently with a nicely phrased note?

Lally112 · 01/08/2014 14:37

That depends, does he have a medical issue? DH has nasal polyps which need to be drained from time to time so if they are having a flare up he cant actually breathe if he closes his mouth. I always know when they're needing done because he holds his hand with his fork up to his mouth to try and stop you seeing but I know.

HappyAgainOneDay · 01/08/2014 14:39

Well, if he does have a medical issue that means he can't eat with his mouth closed, he should go elsewhere to eat or, as Lally suggests, cover his mouth with a napkin or even hide behind his newspaper.

Alisvolatpropiis · 01/08/2014 15:03

I don't think you would be unreasonable.

I find that this is far more common in men than women but can't work out why.

BeckyBusto · 01/08/2014 15:46

Every time he starts eating, put headphones on and listen to thrash metal loudly enough to disturb him so he fucks off to eat somewhere else.

Bellow at him not to be so public with his mastication.

Noisily slurp every drink you have.

Say 'er, do you realise what you're doing when you eat? You have your mouth open and it's really noisy and not very nice to hear.'

squoosh · 01/08/2014 16:09

Bleurgh, people who eat with their mouths open are the pits.

Sprinkle arsenic in his sandwich when he's not looking. Problem solved.

Gruntfuttock · 01/08/2014 16:15

Harsh, but fair squoosh

BeckyBusto · 01/08/2014 16:19

Oh forget what I say. Go with Squoosh. Frankly, he's asking for it.

Callani · 01/08/2014 16:20

Watching this thread with interest as the guy next to me is on a diet where he eats 3 apples a day! Not quietly either... Hmm

Ladyfoxglove · 01/08/2014 16:23

Urgh! I know someone who does this. Wolfs his food and chomps it with an open mouth and then when he's finished, he blows his nose on his napkin. Disgusting to have a meal with him. He's 50 fgs.

squoosh · 01/08/2014 16:25

Oh yes, they're always the ones to blow their nose on their napkin too. And conduct a full nasal cavity examination.

Death to them all!

Rafanderpants · 01/08/2014 17:15

and the ones who talk with food in their mouths too!

makes me puke.

I said to one once ''erm I didn't order sea (see) food so I don't want to see your food either''. he soon stopped!

Fluffyears · 01/08/2014 18:36

I once told someone to close mouth when eating and she said 'I can't the heat will crack my teeth' we nearly passed out laughing at her. Yanbu!

Onesleeptillwembley · 01/08/2014 18:38

It's not bad manners to ask him to stop or eat elsewhere, as that's disgustingly offensive. I'd probably gip.
