To think we shouldn't get this car?

DH's friend has offered him a good deal on a car and he thinks we should buy it. I do not because neither of us can drive although I'm planning to learn soon. We don't have a drive or private parking space and we would have to park it on the street so technically wouldn't we be breaking the law by driving it on the street if a neighbour asked us to move it? Also I think there are higher priority things we could spend the money on because we don't need a car till I've passed my test and we could save up for it in the meantime. AIBU?

It can take months to learn to drive and you'll be paying insurance and tax for a car neither of you can use. Pointless.

Spend the money on something else, or even, LESSONS for you both.

This is the main issue really. It doesn't make sense if you need the money for other things. The rest of the stuff like where to park it is irrelevant. Even if you had a drive you should prioritize your spending and the car is not yet top priority.

Yes, you're right - as a learner driver you shouldn't be driving it anywhere on your own.

Financially, it's only really a good deal if you factor in a few (?) months of running costs because that's effectively dead money .... There'll be another good deal when you're ready to buy.

Can you use it to learn in? I used my own car and got charged a lot less per lesson. Although I guess the difference may have been made up with insurance.

Crazy idea. As said up thread I doubt you'll be able to insure it. And then you won't be able to tax it.

I bought one when I started to learn to drive and it took me a year, fortunately my DP moved up do he had use of it.

It's illegal to own a car without insurance now, even iff off road! So you will need to get your learner's licence and tax, mot and insurance. Thousands of pounds.

Plus, how do you know it is in full working order? The friend could be trying to foist it on a mug.
