To not have a lawyer?

SenoritaViva · 23/07/2014 22:08

...because every suspect in a TV crime drama says "I want to speak to my lawyer". I would have no idea, I'd want A lawyer, definitely not "mine".

Disclaimer, I'm not planning on doing any crimes to need my lawyer but sometimes they're innocent!

I've often wondered this too! I quite fancy having a lawyer at my beck and call 24/7. I've never needed one in real life (apart from buying houses I suppose) but I'd like to say "ah yes, you'll have to talk to my lawyer", or similar.

I have two, my siblings Grin

I think that too. You can sort of understand the big, corporate people, but every Tom, Dick and Harry seems to have one inthe films, don't they ? Grin

I know lots of criminal barristers. I don't think they all have someone on speed dial should they end up arrested.

Even at the times in my life when I've had "my lawyer" they've not been the type to be any use at all when I got wrongly accused of serial killing. Probate, yes, conveyancing, yes, getting me of a charge of Murder 1, not so much.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 23/07/2014 23:53

...getting me off a charge....

I know lots of criminals. Typical conversation:
Call my lawyer.
Who's your lawyer?
I dunno! But you've got to call him, I know my rights.
We will get you a lawyer, but do you want your own one or a duty one?
I don't want 'your' one!
Ad infinitum. Criminals are stupid! ;-)

It's funny how they never ask who the lawyer is. How do the police/FBI know who to call.
