Apparently 80% of British couples who have traveled to America to choose the gender of their baby want a girl.

What do people think? Is Beverly Turner right? Do all women secretly (or not) crave a daughter?

Interesting when in many parts of the world the desire for a male child is so overwhelming.
Not reading the article though - it drives me mad when they use dickish sweeping statements about "every woman." Lazy writing, IMO.

I didn't want a girl. Adore my DD now.

I didn't think I would connect with a daughter as I'm not into thing typically society deems female like shopping, makeup and hair ect.

I really, really wanted to have boys. I don't have a good relationship with my mother and I was petrified when I learnt that DC2 and 3 were girls.

I love them with all my heart, no more or less than my son, but I am afraid I will be a crap mother for them.

I don't think that correlates to "all women" want daughters somehow, I think it correlates to "People who are crazy enough to travel thousands of miles and pay thousands of dollars to choose the sex of their baby" want daughters.

I got about two lines in before the sexist cliches made me feel nauseous an I had to stop.

I did. I longed for a daughter.

Which probably means that they want said daughter as a fashion accessory they can dress up in pretty dresses and hair accessories. Not so much of a market for this with boys.

I mean if you want a friend you would just, um, make a friend. You wouldn't travel halfway around the world to produce one in a lab.

I'm not saying everyone who wants a girl wants a fashion accessory, BTW. I would love to have a daughter. But based on the "80% of people travelling for this reason" thing.

I have two boys and have never craved a daughter.

I'm not planning any more DC but if I did I'd secretly hope for another boy. Though obviously love a girl just as much as any of my DS's. I just don't feel the craving for a daughter.

I'm not going to read it. Any article that starts with the headline 'Why every woman [does anything]' is automatically bollocks.

its because people objectify little girls just as much as they do women.

I wanted Elmo. I'm happy with ds and dd though.

My dd is 13yo and has never wanted to lay the table in her life. Must be doing something wrong.

I longed for a baby - I had a slight preference for a boy. I had a boy and with the second one I was happy with another boy. My OH had a slight preference for a girl first time but was happy with a son and 2nd time he too had a prefernce for a boy as that is what he was now used to having.

Regardless of gender we loved and wanted them. I still have no hankering for a girl - clearly I must be abnormal.

If I could have picked, I would have picked a girl. Now I have a 6m old son, I'm so glad it wasn't up to me.

Good lord, I have 4 dds. The image she paints of compliant dds is not remotely near the truth. My dds would rather plsy football than prepare TV!

Sadly though, I often hear mums tell me how sad they are not to have a girl :-(. One mum told me (in front of her sons) that she'd consider the £20k it costs for selective ivf, but was concerned it would be wasted money if it didn't work. I felt sorry for her little son standing there at her legs...

I want boys. We have two of them & I'm pregnant with our third & final, I want this one to be a boy.

Whenever this topic of feeling sorry for those with all boys/all girls/missing out, and so on, comes up, I really don't know what I am supposed to be missing out on?

I have 3 boys and I had a preference for boys, but would have loved my daughters if I had any. I assume that some mothers of girls wonder what they are supposed to be missing out on by not having a boy

I don't crave a daughter. Never have. I craved a baby for a while, got pg, had DS, was happy. Never wanted another.

Oooooh this gets my back up!!!!!!! Am currently pregnant. Literally could not care less if I tried what gender our baby is, I just want a healthy baby. Have worked in Gynae in the past (as a nurse) and witnessed much heartache with loss and fertility problems. Cannot fathom for a second why anyone would go into having children with such preconceptions based on gender.

I have be mum who tried to 'force' me to be the person she wanted me to be growing up instead of letting me be who I was. Made me miserable. You should love your children for whoever they are/will be. Not because of gender or some other arbitrary characteristic you want them to have. Gender prefer are are almost always based on stupid gender stereotypes. If you want a 'doll' to dress up in pink frilly froo-froo then buy yourself one of those life-like baby dolls. If you want a 'best friend' to go shopping with, have chats/gossip etc then find yourself some new friends. If you dream of being there at your DDs wedding/DGC birth (or other stupid cliches about daughters) then give yourself a slap and remember that she might not want to get married, or have children. Or indeed be able to have children (and doesn't need the extra weight of your disappointment from long-held 'dreams' never being realised in such a situation. She needs your unconditional support!!).

I agree, I think "all women" here only refers to those stupid enough to travel half way around the world chasing some self-indulgent fantasy.

What these people need is a day helping out on a children's oncology unit.....
