DH helpfully did the ironing this morning but somehow managed to put the still hot iron on our nice new carpet

AIBU to not blow my top? My mum thinks I am, she also thinks it's a sign that DH can't be trusted to iron in future

I said it was a good opportunity to buy a nice new rug and promptly banned him from ironing in any carpeted room so we're off shopping later :-)

That poor carpet though, it's only been in a week!

I think you have to ask yourself, what would his reaction be if you'd done exactly the same thing?

Do you iron on the floor?

The best response other than a new carpet and maybe a new iron is of course to give him MORE practice in ironing he obviously needs it

Unless you suspect he did it deliberately, I would just put it down to an innocent mistake and leave it at that. He obviously knows how old the carpet is and presumably wouldn't have done it for any reasons other than a momentary lapse in concentration, so what is the point going on about it and making him feel worse than he already probably does?
Does your mum have other reasons to believe that your husband is incompetent? And why you should you have to do all the ironing, or is she offering to do it?

I agree - he definitely needs to iron more!

Do you normally 'blow your top' at each other for things? I don't generally find it a helpful response to a genuine mistake...

And I certainly wouldn't say that means he must never iron in future - I don't get out of doing things just because I can be clumsy!

Why did he put it plate down on the carpet? , I'm curious.

I think I would do my nut at dp if he put the iron on the new carpet! But I like your action of new rug...new iron too and lots more practice for dh

More practice and he buys the new rug but if you have not got an ironing board perhaps that is needed more!

Nah he's not banned just has to do it in the designated ironing room (where it normally gets done). He wanted to watch a film with ds so combined the two :-/ suppose I should be thankful ds helped put the ironing board away otherwise he could have gotten hold of the iron!

You can probably claim on your house insurance. I'd be annoyed too though - you'd think he'd be extra careful ironing in a room with a new carpet! And why did he put it on the floor? Don't use this is his 'I'm never ironing again' opportunity though - no, no, no!

If you've still got offcuts from the new carpet and if it's not patterned, you might be able to repair it - probably a job for a professional though, if your DIY skills are anything like mine!

My husband did a feature wall yesterday, got (red) paint on the carpet. Left a dust sheet on the radiator which peeled off loads of paint when I later went to remove It. He the went to get the (white) bedding in off the line and spilled the dregs of his tea on duvet cover. He also left the freezer open and it defrosted all over the kitchen floor.

I could have killed him tbh but what can you do... no one died!

You should be able to repair it - or get someone to do it if you have any off cuts or can get some more...
With a sharp knife (stanley) you cut round the mark and use it as template to cut a piece out of a new bit (matching pattern etc) has to be a snug fit ...then you can just glue it to the floor or attach tape sticky side up to the edges of the hole and glue the new piece to that ...if you pay someone they might sew it etc ...do a better job...
Only worth doing cos it is new and it shouldn't have faded etc - so new piece will match...
Obviously if you DIY it do a google etc for tips and DP will have to do it.

I would also say DP definitely needs more - not less - practice in a non carpeted room... (with no access to TV etc!)

Oh god yes I'd be much more worried about the safety of your ds, given that it doesn't seem like your dh was actually aware of how dangerous a hot iron is... Thank goodness he wasn't left in the room with a hot iron on the floor!

both DS and DH have done this, after a while you don't notice the mark

An iron mark in the right place can make a perfect foot scratching spot for those who enjoy such things!

I'd be mad but its done and blowing up won't change that. I'd do as others have suggested and try to fix it as its a new carpet.

As a teen DH ironed his carpet to get rid of the marks from moving furniture what possessed him I don't know.

Iron burns and emulsion will comd out of a carpet using a fine sandpaper.

Rub in a circular motion, takes a while, but works a treat!

EvilStepMam beat me to it, was going to say sand it or shave it out.... gently... hoovering the dust/fibres away often. (DD and hair straightener burn on carpet here! she got rid of it beautifully)
