To expect a £40 fan to last more than a year

Went to turn on our fan, nothing. Checked order and we got it 16 July last year, of course it has a one year guarantee. Utterly pissed off, how much do I need to shout at John Lewis to get it sorted?

New fuse?

SiennaBlake · 19/07/2014 23:44

Less shouting, more politely worded email and you'll probably get it sorted.

Complaint, compliment, compensation beats the rage everytime.

I am of course normally very polite, I wouldn't shout. I just feel like it as I am rather hot now!

I will check the fuse but if they go don't they normally trip the switch (our fuse board goes when a bulb blows)?

You usually get a. 2 year guarantee with everything Looloo

Bet they give you a new one

EarSlaps · 19/07/2014 23:50

I think I'll email now. Can't remember when I collected but order date was 16/7/13, so earliest possible collection was 17/7/13. Does the guarantee start from order date or when collected?

Clearly states 1 year on order email.

Quote the Sale of Goods Act at them.

Products should last for a reasonable time - I'd expect to get more than a year out of an electric fan; especially as it presumably wasn't used that much over the winter?

EarSlaps · 21/07/2014 22:27

Well this story has a happy ending Smile.

I emailed John Lewis, simply stating that the item had stopped working and I expected it to last longer. They rang this afternoon to offer a replacement. They didn't have it in stock so I chose a cheaper one and they are refunding the difference. They are even delivering it on a day of my choice. The new one has a 2year guarantee.

Huge thumbs up for John Lewis. Great customer service again (they were also amazing when delonghi messed up servicing my dehumidifier).

JL do have an excellent reputation for customer service.

No doubt they can get things wrong though.

Try the same approach to Currys....

EarSlaps · 21/07/2014 23:19

I used to work in another major electrical retailer. Not a bloody chance there, they would do anything to get out of replacing things. I don't really shop there now Grin.

Woo! Good news Smile

Yay! I like this update Grin
