to give this as a gift...?

Disclaimer: Not wanting to start a debate on whether or not we should reward our DC for school work. Just to as if you think this is an acceptable gift.

DS just did v well (better than expected) in his exams (gcse equivalents -we are abroad.)
DH was going to give him €100 as an end of term/ well done gift. However, DS recently broke his nice mobile and I know he would really like a new one. (He has an old non-smart phone to tide him over.)
I have an iphone 4s that I was about to ebay, having just upgraded. WIBU to give this to DS along with €50 for his gift?

The phone is perfect and I would have sold it for over €100 so it seems to me like a good deal. I know he would love an iphone. Plus he'd have €50 as holiday spending money and no worries about saving up for a new phone.
But does it seem mean to dress up my old phone as a gift?

Background: DS' old phone was broken (mostly his own silliness -he left it on the side of a football pitch and it got smashed) a couple of months ago and I have refused to replace it partly as I can't really afford to and partly to try to teach him to be more careful. DS is 14.5

I would

I think it's fine.

You could give your DS the choice. We do that for DD1, e.g. for her last phone (xmas present) the choice was new but lower spec, or pre-owned but higher spec. She was more than happy to have pre-owned.

Like TaT - I think you give him the choice. It sounds like a mighty fine offer to me.

fortifiedwithtea · 18/07/2014 13:57

I would just give him the phone.

Notso · 18/07/2014 13:59

I wouldn't as you were not buying him a phone as a consequence of him being careless.
I would give him the cash then give him the opportunity to buy the phone.

My 16 year old DS would be really happy with that.

I think that sounds like a good plan. Congrats to your son.
