Should I have confronted speeding driver in front if my children?

Mere moments after leaving home for school this morning I chewed out another driver for driving too fast down my street (recently made 20mph zone). I physically placed my car in such a way that they had to stop while I put my window down and had my rant. Now feeling rather guilty that I did this in front of my children, all sitting very quietly. Not that I'm a perfect driver, but I am more careful in 20mph areas and knowing how many more families live here, was incensed that this driver wasn't observing the limit. Unreasonable? Hormones taking control or justified?Confused

cars driving too fast past my home make me irrationally furious.

good for you. hopefully they'll slow down, or use another street in future!

you didn't swear, did you? :)

bigdog888 · 18/07/2014 09:49

And you know for a fact this driver was speeding? If you'd tried that with me I'd have verbally ripped you a new arsehole.

squigglypie · 18/07/2014 10:24

I didn't swear! Just was a bit patronising but think tact might have been better option.

In terms of judging speed, difficult- but it certainly seemed to me that given the number of parked cars and steepness of the hill, they could have taken more care.

Anyone who felt they weren't speeding would have denied it wouldn't they? Or defended themselves? This one just said 'ok'.

Not really a confrontational person so I think my reaction took me by surprise...

The 20mph speed signs are a suggestion not the law. Even experienced traffic police find it hard to judge speed in built up areas.

You were very unreasonable and wrong block the road and verbally assault another driver.

littlewhitebag · 18/07/2014 10:36

20mph signs are a suggestion not the law? Then how come you can be charged for exceeding them?

bigdog888 · 18/07/2014 10:38

That is simply not true.

Seriouslyffs · 18/07/2014 10:39

Bollocks fishybits

A green 20mph road sign is according to our local PCs x 2 is a suggestion not the law. They cannot prosecute drivers driving faster than 20mph but slower than 30.

It is an advisory sign.

canyou · 18/07/2014 10:45

If I was with in the speed limit and you did this to me with adC in the car I would have beenShock and said ok and then reported you to thepolice for road rage. I have reported it in the past and well here in Irl the Garda traffic corp are good at following it up.

On what planet do you live? I'm just curious.

gobbin · 18/07/2014 10:47

I've never seen green advisory 20mph signs, ours are all proper red circle speed-at-your-peril signs. Our local advisories are all a number on a white background (e.g. 50mph on some m-way bends) but nobody takes any notice of them (including me).

Anotheronebitthedust · 18/07/2014 10:48

Where in OPs message does it say it was a green 20 mph sign and not a red one?

ohforfoxsake · 18/07/2014 10:49

Wouldn't worry about it. Sounds like you told someone off for going too fast, kids probably forgotten about it, driver accepted it, don't give it another thought.

Smile

A Scottish planet.

Seriously, have a google.

I was flapping my gums to the loch police about people speeding and they said there was nothing they could do about people driving faster than 20mph but slower than 30mph no matter how many green 20mph signs there were.

bigdog888 · 18/07/2014 10:51

To be fair there used to be a number of the advisory 20mph advisory zones buy there are now plenty of bona fide 20mph limits.

Jayne35 · 18/07/2014 10:56

I think YABU because it's dangerous to confront people like this, especially with your DC's in the car. My SIL once did what you did and got followed and intimidated, her DC's were terrified. Better to just let it go IMO.

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 18/07/2014 10:59

I think OP is talking about a red sign and fishy a green one.
