To still be using a booster seat for my average height nearly 11 yo dd?

She is 145 cm tall, and likes sitting on her booster seat. I feel her seatbelt fits her better, even though she is average height for her age.

I had assumed that she still needed it, but recently checked the guidelines and see that I could have stopped when she was 135 cm. Is she the only child her size left in the country still using a booster seat?

My ds is 11 but only 128cm and he will be staying in one until he is 135cm at least. Better safe than sorry.

Fannydabbydozey · 14/07/2014 12:06

No my skinny skinny (just) 11 year old son uses one. Until he moans about it he'll stay in it as it makes the seatbelt fit him so much better.

YANBU dd wasn't tall enough until after her eleventh birthday so was using hers until then. She seemed comfortable and the seatbelt fitted better using the booster until she was taller.

The last rule in France is that you need a booster seat if under 17 and below 150 cm (I have a friend who is below that as an adult not sure how it applies for her!).
The driver is responsible.

DD1 is 9 but 138/9 cm (? she might even be 140 now?), she is more comfortable with a booster as the seat belt sits better.

lynniep · 14/07/2014 12:27

I don't think you are at all -if she likes it and its more comfortable for her.

redskybynight · 14/07/2014 12:36

I think it probably depends on your car. DS stopped using his booster seat when he was about 140cm because at that point the seat belt was more awkward with a booster than it was without.

FluffyPiggle · 14/07/2014 12:38

If she's happy I don't see an issue. Safety first after all! I'm 5 ft 2 and an adult seatbelt in my car doesn't fit properly

spence24 · 14/07/2014 12:40

My DAD is only 8 but 140cm already! Not needing the seats any more has made our lives easier as we have some vintage and sports cars in the family that car seats don't fit in, so now she can ride in them legally and the seat belts fit!
I guess it's whatever works for you as long as no laws are being broken and the child is safe I don't see the harm.

Lol at 8 yo dad

Vacillating · 14/07/2014 12:42

The legal limit is lower than the safest limit. In most cars it is more 150cm before the belt fits well without a booster. Depends as well on your child and their ratio of body to leg.

Nymeria01 · 14/07/2014 13:59

If she is fine with it then I don't see the problem. Its still safer that she has one even if she isn't obliged by law to sit in one.

Amy106 · 14/07/2014 17:02

She is both safe and happy so why not? Smile

bluesbaby · 14/07/2014 17:37

If she's still comfortable she should be fine!

LeMousquetaire adults are fine without boosters because their pelvic bones are fulled formed and they are less likely to be thrown out of a fast moving vehicle.

My 8 yr old has no booster seat. Her head was almost on the roof of the car! Depends on the child I guess.

scrappydappydoo · 14/07/2014 19:55

My 8yr old dd is 141cm. She is still in high backed booster because it fits her. I've said she's staying in it until her head is above the top although she whinges that all her friends are either in basic boosters or not at all (mean mummy)

Lucyccfc · 14/07/2014 21:13

Same here. My DS, who has just turned 9 is 136cm and doesn't want his booster seat because his friends don't use one. I have an MX5, which has really low seats, so the seat belt doesn't sit right without the booster.

I've told him it's a booster or we sell the car. He loves the car, so he's decided the booster is ok for now.

Madsometimes · 15/07/2014 08:10

I probably will put it away soon, because she is about to go up to secondary school. However, we may still use it on motorway journeys. It's not a high backed booster seat, but is very padded and I think she finds it comfortable.

My 12 year old DD still uses hers! She's only about an inch shorter than me and I'm 5 nothing. Smile

She likes it and if she's in the front I think it makes her safer.

Homebird8 · 15/07/2014 08:40

Here in New Zealand the advice is "Why don't you wait til I'm 148". Not law but advice to use booster seats until the child is only 10vm shorter than me Wink
