For not wanting to look white and frumpy when I go on Holiday? (spray tan nightmare!)

I'm pale, chicken skin and frumpy. I tried Garnier Solaire spray on tan and the bits of my body it worked on look gorgeous - in other places however I have ffing stripes and patches and it looks bloody stupid. Mortified as it won't come off no matter how much I scrub at it and I have to wear short sleeves for work.

AIBU to be seriously considering actual sunbeds because these "tanning" products just don't work???

I wouldn't use a sunbed. Try something like a tinted moisturizer to cover the patches.

squoosh · 14/07/2014 11:32

Don't go down the sunbed route!

Pale is fashionable, embrace it.

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2014 11:34

Why not try a professional spry tan?

Iamblossom · 14/07/2014 11:35

I am also pale. Very. I use L'Oreal self tanning gel with a mitt. I only put it on my legs.

It doesn't go patchy, or streaky. You have to be careful that you spread it evenly particularly on your feet, but with some practice it does look good and means I can wear skirts and shorts.

I shave and exfoliate my legs thoroughly before I apply it and I only do one layer maybe once a week, sometimes once a fortnight.

Can't beat a spray tan at a salon, always nice and even and last a good week

PatchyNora · 14/07/2014 11:46

Going for two weeks though, if it starts going weird half way through holiday I'm knackered! lol

You won't be looking white by day 3 of holiday anyway if you're planning on sunbathing. Anyway, a tan won't make you feel less frumpy would it?

specialsubject · 14/07/2014 12:43

go to Asia where white skin is prized and they sell skin whiteners (which are as dangerous as sunbeds).

or appreciate a healthy body and enjoy your holiday.

OnlyLovers · 14/07/2014 12:48

I'd go for a professional spray tan. I wouldn't dare try self-tanning as I'm cack-handed and would look like a skewbald pony.

And presumably you'll pick up a bit of colour during the holiday, so by the time it fades you won't be as white.

Scarletohello · 14/07/2014 12:59

It's a shame pale skin is seen as frumpy. Tanned skin is a sign of skin damage and is the no 1 cause of ageing skin. I'm nearly 50, look 10 years younger as I never sunbathed( gave up as skin just goes red or mildly freckly). Hated my skin when I was younger but feel glad now.

Get a spray tan, put on a good sunscreen and enjoy your Hol!

Sorry for lecture...:)

Is fake tan different these days? About 20 years ago I applied some before I went on holiday and sweated it off. If didn't even come off evenly. I had big white patches on my throat, under my armpits, between my breasts, backs of my knees and the rest just looked dirty.

Sicaq · 14/07/2014 13:04

Personally I think pale skin is far less frumpy than an artificial tan.

squoosh · 14/07/2014 13:07

Pale skin is very chic these days. You rarely see a tango tan on the red carpet.

cantbelievemyeyes · 14/07/2014 13:14

I'm quite happy being pale most of the time, but feel a bit better with a little bit of colour when I'm going to be in a swimsuit so I just use the holiday skin/ gradual tanning moisturiser things. Use it a couple of days before the trip and a couple of times on holiday- no streaks or tango skin. I don't sunbathe/ use sunbeds and use factor 50 all the time so wouldn't tan on holiday. Maybe give something like this a try?

creampie · 14/07/2014 13:18

Get a spray tan at a salon then top it up every other day with a pale/light self tan moisturiser.

Keeps it looking fairly fresh and it doesn't matter if you miss a bit one day as you fill it in the next time. if you do it regularly it ends up pretty even

Icelollycraving · 14/07/2014 13:25

If it's bad,you can get it off. How bad is it? Perhaps if you show pictures...
