18 month old in infant car seat?

Ds is 18 months old and weighs nearly 13 kg. We have a rear facing toddler seat in our car but tomorrow me and a friend are planning on taking our kids for a day out and my friend's car is not compatable with ds's car seat.

wibu to take ds in his infant seat? It is a short (15 min) journey, I could get public transport but it is a real faff to get to the place we are going.

My Dd is the same age and I've wondered about doing this - would prevent logjam with DH and I sharing childminder pickups - but we haven't done it. Too dangerous.

I would look at his length to judge, if his head is over the edge then no way. If he's short and sturdy I would.

I was about to say 19 month dd is in one, but she's 8.6kg so a different case

I think our seat goes up to 13 kg, I would imagine if he still fits (head still within seat ?) it would be ok ? I am no expert though.

What is max weight for car seat? Some are 13 kg I believe. Where does the baby's head sit in relation to the top of the seat?
Mine used his first seat until around 17 months, he was the right height and weight for it.

if the top of his ears are lower than the top of the seat and he's below the weight limit (13kg for most of them), then it's fine. My dd was in an infant carrier until she was two. Her ears still don't reach the top of the seat even now and she's 11.8kg

He is on the 50th centile for height and weight, so I guess it's likely he will be too tall, he is asleep so I can't test it right now, I'll do it first thing in the morning.

We chnged to his rf seat when he was 6 months old as he was massive and he looked uncomfy in his infant seat, but he has slimmed down and actually doesn't weigh much more than he did at 6 months, I last used his infant seat when he was 9 months and there was still space at the top, so I hope he still fits!

infant car seats go up to 13kg. if the tops of his ears are over the back of the car seat then I wouldn't use it. if he still fits length ways, which an average 18 month old would, then it'll be fine.

My son was in an infant carrier till 21 months - weight limit was 13kg and he was under that and he's 9th line for height so he head was well below the top of the seat. Was a graco logico so deeper than average seat. All depends on child's head not being above the top of the seat AND the upper weight limit of seat.

ikeaismylocal · 08/07/2014 21:02

Car seat max weight is 13 kg, ds was about 12.5 less than a month ago.

My dd is 3 next month weighs about 11.5kg and I tried her in my niece's infant carrier seat just out of interest the other day and she fits. Her ears were way below the edge and she's not tiny either think she is about 92cm. It did make me have a little chuckle about all my friends just turned 1 year olds who are apparently far too big for theirs whilst still being lots littler than dd.

Actually the top of the ears thing is incorrect (this is my job), if the top of his head is touching the flat of your palm when resting your palm against the top of the seat then he is too big. Ear level is the next stage up. The maximum weight should also be 13kg - or 20lbs.
