to not cat-sit?

Hi all,

I've been at this company for 9 months. Not close to this colleague at all but she has helped my team out a couple of times. Today she asks that, as she is going on holiday in one week, could I come and stay at her place and cat sit for that week. She is going to ask her EX-boyfriend first though!!! (Surely hasn't she someone else she can ask? Or put it in a cattery?!)

I think there are 2 reasons she has asked:

  1. I asked after her cat when it was ill (it had diorrheoa)
  2. She knows I am in a rented room at the moment so she reckons I'd like to have "more space to myself" for a week.

Reasons I don't want to:

  1. I have no idea what her place is like. I suspect it might be a bit of a dive, to be honest.
  2. I don't want to end up taking an ill cat to the vet in my car (esp if diorrhoea)
  3. What if something goes wrong, like she accuses me of breaking/stealing something?

Am I being unreasonable? How do I politely refuse?
Many thanks!

You are being entirely reasonable. Just tell her you like to sleep in your own bed! Or that you have an allergy.

No is a complete . . .

YANBU I wouldn't leave my kitties with just anyone, but I also wouldn't put them in a cattery. It takes a certain someone to look after other peoples cats.

Yanbu. She needs to put her cat into a cattery. She isn't doing you any favours just because your in a rented room. You don't need to justify why you don't want to it's her cat her responsibility.

"No thank you. You'd be much better off with a professional pet sitter - they have insurance in case anything goes wrong."
