I have just seen an advert from Breakthrough Breast Cancer which stresses the importance of checking oneself and urges everyone to contact them for a leaflet which outlines the 5 possible signs of breast cancer.
The advert was at least 45 seconds long and mentions the number to call/text at least 5 times and stresses again and again how important it is to know these signs, how few women know what to look for and how fewer people would die if they had checked themselves BUT it doesn't actually say what the 5 signs are.
Call me cynical, but isn't it just a 'name gathering for fundraising'exercise? Now I appreciate charities have to raise funds for their work, but if, as they claimed, their aim is to reach as many women as possible, wouldn't it have been better to spend some of the advert time actually imparting the essential information thereby reaching everyone watching, rather than the few that actually get around to contacting them?
Phew, rant over - this is a topic that is very emotive for me as I am currently being treated for breast cancer and so am particularly aware of how important early detection is.
