To think that no-one works till 8pm every Friday

My OH has just called to say (as per usual) that he won't be back until late as he is still working. He does a professional job in the city, as do I.

However, my experience of the working world is that while you may work late Monday - Thursday, on a Friday there isn't anyone around after 5pm in the office. We had dinner plans so I'm sat here starving, thinking I may as well have met friends!

WIBU to be grumpy at him when he gets home, and expect an apology? Or should I just accept this as part of who he is?

To give some context he gets in to work at 9.30am, so not exactly an early bird!

That's how I remember it in general but there were certain Fridays when I'd be in there past 9 (inv bank)

JustMarriedBecca · 27/06/2014 20:01

My city based team work until 10pm on Fridays. I think they are bonkers. I've been home since 7pm!

He could be having a drink with work colleagues.....I consider that 'work'

Anone · 27/06/2014 20:02

He's not having a few beers on the way home is he?

sewinghomey · 27/06/2014 20:02

What's the underlying issue here? You think he's not being truthful?

If not, then yabu. Plenty of people work well past 8pm, certainly if they start later too.

CoffeeTea103 · 27/06/2014 20:02

My DH is in a city job (banking) and this seems normal even for a Friday.

Poofus · 27/06/2014 20:03

I work until past 8 on a Friday, but from home, which makes a difference. Still grim though.

myusernameis · 27/06/2014 20:03

I often work until 8, 9, 10 and sometimes 11pm Sad including on a Friday. Going to put a stop to that when I go back after mat leave.

Pugaboo · 27/06/2014 20:04

I don't work in the city or in banking or even in London and some people regularly work past 7 on Friday.

flowery · 27/06/2014 20:04

I'm working. :)

If you don't believe him that he's working, I expect you have a reason for that, other than your previous experience of quiet offices on a Friday evening.

weegiemum · 27/06/2014 20:04

My dh works till past 8 every Friday.

He's a GP, has to clear stuff up for the weekend.

Tonight it's his last weekend before 2 weeks holiday. He'll be home about 10!

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 27/06/2014 20:05

Tricky, plenty worked late every night when I was in the City.

If he really is working then YABU to be grumpy with him, it's not his fault....I bet he'd rather be in the pub.

flowery · 27/06/2014 20:06

I've just realised my earlier post was self-evidently a complete fabrication. Grin

What I should have said was I am supposed to be drafting letters but am instead pootling about on MN because letter drafting is boring.

Dolallytats · 27/06/2014 20:07

My daughter does. Although she's a beauty therapist in the city, not an office worker.

Cornettoninja · 27/06/2014 20:08

I don't do it every Friday, but certainly on a noteable basis. Sometimes there's just a pile of crap just looking at you that you'd rather not walk into on Monday morning and sometimes it's a deadline that falls on something daft like 10am Monday morning.

If I've no cement plans sometimes it's just worth it for my own benefit.

YouTheCat · 27/06/2014 20:08

The fact that's he's working is neither here nor there, you had plans together.

Jewels234 · 27/06/2014 20:09

The real issue is that I am getting hangry.

I trust him...but find it frustrating that in my world it's only him that works that late on a Friday. Obviously I have much nicer hours than I thought :)

Rubbish if you're still working, but nice to know it's not just him!

I work in an office and work every saturday nught til 11pm and some friday nights too.

Not all office jobs are 9-5 (or 9-3 on a friday).

Does his business trade internationally? He may need to stay late to make calls to countries 5-8 hrs behind).

Bannakaffalatta · 27/06/2014 20:10

I work till at least 7 every Friday.

livelablove · 27/06/2014 20:11

I don't think you should be grumpy with him, but you need to come up with something better so you know where you are, and aren't hanging round waiting for him. If you knew in advance what he was doing you could arrange things with friends or something. If there is a good chance he will be working late he shouldn't make plans with you.

Neverknowingly · 27/06/2014 20:12

I'm working - waiting for a reply from solicitors to a point I just made on a contract. No end to my working day in sight yet.

Friday is a natural deadline day and of all days is the day when I say no-one should rely on me to be finished on time.

MsVenus · 27/06/2014 20:13

My dh gets home between 8-10pm most nights, I dont like it but theres not much I can do about it as its been like this for 14 years.

weeblueberry · 27/06/2014 20:14

Depends if he works with international clients. Our hq is in San Francisco so feasibly and if I could be arsed I could easily work til 8pm every Friday.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 27/06/2014 20:15

It is 20:13. I finished work 5 minutes ago.

I've given up trying to go out on Fridays, because I am always, always chained to my computer trying to get things off my desk so I don't have to do them on Saturday or Sunday (city solicitor here).

Wednesdays and Thursdays are often worse (11pm to 1am). Mondays and Tuesdays I start at 8am so as to get out a bit earlier.

But I love my job, so I don't mind.

scottishmummy · 27/06/2014 20:15

Whats your beef?whats really bugging you

noneofyours · 27/06/2014 20:16

It's not just him :( Some jobs get more busy towards the weekend. Because we work with the US a lot we have to stay later sometimes due to communicating with a time difference.

How about making dinner for say half seven eight on a friday and if he's not there yet then keep it warm? Really he should let you know though but if it's a usual thing then better to just keep arm.
