AIBU to want it all to match?

I think I may have lost the plot. We recently decorated a new bedroom for DD1 to move into, to free up her bedroom for DD2 (3 storey house, wanted DD2 on same floor as us as she still wakes in the night etc). To put it in context, our house needs a fair bit of work and we are short of time to get stuff done (4yo and 1yo, both work full time) so this was A Big Deal. DH painted the room in DD1's chosen pink, I bought new curtains and I ordered a bed, bedside table and wardrobe online for the room from a large retailer. The matching chest of drawers was out of stock. I emailed to check it wasn't discontinued and was assured more stock would be coming soon, so ordered the other items to make sure they didn't go out of stock in the meantime, and put a stock alert on the drawers.

About 2 weeks later, they came back in stock. I ordered and got a delivery date. At that point, I told DH it was safe to unpack and assemble the other items as the drawers were coming. The shop then called me on the delivery date to say they had a problem with the courier and I had to rearrange delivery, but when asked they assured me they didn't have an issue with the stock, it was just that the courier had a backlog. They gave me a new delivery date a week later.

2 days after that, I got an email to say the order had been cancelled. No explanation, just 'your order has been cancelled, we have refunded you'. I rang up to ask what the problem was and they said it was cancelled because they had tried to call me with additional security questions (wtf??) and I hadn't been able to answer them! This was utter bullshit.

So, the manager I spoke to told me he would personally set up the stock alert and order the drawers for me when they came back into stock. They offered me a substantial discount on the listed price and were very apologetic. But it's now one month later and no sign of these fecking drawers coming back in stock. I emailed the manager I'd spoken to and asked when they are likely to come, and he has essentially told me to choose another chest of drawers and he will sell them to me for a greatly reduced price.

I do not want another design. The range I have chosen is very distinctive. I do not want my only nicely decorated room in my whole house (which is a crumbling shithole in every other room) to have mismatched furniture, like a jumble sale. I have spent savings on getting a full matching set for this room. I would have just bought random cut-price items if I didn't mind it looking like a mish-mash. I do mind. I have lost all reason and have told them that if they can't get the matching chest of drawers I don't want any of the rest of the set and they can come and collect it and refund me. DH is terrified that I might just be serious. I am absolutely, deadly serious.

So, do I just need a stiff gin and a lie down and to get over myself? Or is it entirely reasonable that I want just one room in my house to look naice? I really don't know any more. Sad I never thought I would be the sort of person to lose my shit over a sodding chest of drawers, but it seems I am.

I do see your point.

If the range is that distinctive, have you tried looking on e-bay for a second hand one?

emsyj · 23/06/2014 21:15

I don't think I would get one second hand to be honest, it's not that old a range - and I don't really want a second hand one. I want it all new, and matching and perfect. Every other room in the house is full of mismatched and second hand stuff, I want this one all pristine perfect. Blush

Just checked ebay though to show willing - nothing.

Yanbu. And I say this as someone who has done much the same on a much smaller scale. When ds1 was a baby there was a recall on his baby gros but not the matching vest. Unreasonable and hormonal as I was at the time, I insisted the store refund me for the vests as well as they had been sold with the clear intention of being a matching set bought in two parts. They did refund me :) (I learnt my lesson with dts and only bought plain white vests).

There is no harm in asking persistently and labouring the point that the intention is for the furniture to be sold as a matching set. The only problem you may have is that the unwanted furniture is now assembled.

Is it and independent store or have they checked up and down the country to make sure there isn't what you want lurking in a stock room/display room somewhere?

emsyj · 23/06/2014 21:45

It's a large supermarket chain Mini - the guy has been very patient and sympathetic so far, but I can tell that he thinks I am a PITA. Sad I don't think they actually sell furniture in store, just online, so I doubt they would have any in a back room somewhere unfortunately. I have made it clear to them that I (or rather, DH) didn't open and assemble the bed, bedside and wardrobe until I had a delivery date for the drawers. I should have waited til I had them in my sweaty hands!!!

i think you are able to demand a refund on the full set and buy another set. explain again about not assembling them until you had a delivery date for the draws and you want a full refund.

SarcyMare · 23/06/2014 21:50

you give us details (a picture or link), and we will hunt out nice matching draws for you

emsyj · 23/06/2014 22:00

I know this will sound utterly ridiculous, but I am too scared to post a link to the range as I think this will make it even harder to get the sodding chest of drawers! Last time they came back in stock they were sold out again within 3 hours.

No I would be mad as well and send it all back, to fair on them I'd try and pick a new range with the same shop. It's reasonable to assume you wanted matching furniture.
