I love my birthday. I love my family's birthdays. I'm in my 30s and I expect presents. My DH expects presents too. The birthday person gets a day of their own whim and choosing. I can't imagine thinking one day 'oh birthdays are for children, I shall ignore an excuse to have fun with people who love me, or to spend an evening doing as I please without feeling guilt'

fuck it I LOVE MY BIRTHDAY!

come flame for being so entitled.

EmptyNestAgain · 23/06/2014 13:22

Nope, no flame. It's one day for you ffs, out of a whole year. We're worth it!

Heels99 · 23/06/2014 13:24

Yanbu as long as you are happy with inexpensive presents and aren't demanding extravagant gifts

CoffeeTea103 · 23/06/2014 13:27

It is only on here that you will get that type of attitude. In rl people love their birthdays and love celebrating other peoples too. I love my birthday and look forward to it, friends and family getting together, the surprise presents and have a big deal made of me.

Melonbreath · 23/06/2014 13:30

Yanbu. I am the same.
I don't care what I get as long as it is for ME and me alone. Ie, not household stuff that we need.
best present last year? My mate got me a load of balls of wool from the charity shop to crochet with. Worst present? A tub to carry the washing with from MIL.

DoJo · 23/06/2014 13:31

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter!

I'm not bothered about presents but always arrange a big holiday around the time of my birthday as it's close or during a half tern school holiday. I also plan a social evening, either friends over or a meal out. If I want new stuff i just buy it for myself during the year.

LookingThroughTheFog · 23/06/2014 13:32

I actually do hate my birthday and hate celebrating it. I'm really appreciative of the children's home made cards and presents - it matters to them, and I find that wish to give very sweet. It's right before Christmas, and I'd prefer time and funds to be diverted to the children.

I like to give DH a present on his birthday, but we don't have a lot of money, and it's a week after DDs, so money gets diverted her way. He's never complained about this.

But each to their own. I don't think that everybody should hate their birthday simply because I do. Nor will I be pressurised into having a big bash because other people like them.

Basically: Birthdays - do what feels right for you.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/06/2014 13:34

I have just had a birthday. The celebrations lasted 5 days.

YANBU - I love brthdays and presents (other peoples as well as my own, and giving as well as receiving) and YANBU

If you would like a special birthday flaming I could give you one, being as it's your special day and all.

I never get this hair shrt wearing attitude to birthdays on MN.

BrucieTheShark · 23/06/2014 13:36

But do you insist everyone calls you the 'birthday princess' all day?

If not I think you are being too restrained.

EmpireBiscuit · 23/06/2014 13:37

YANBU, I completely agree.

Spare a thought for me, my SIL has booked her wedding on my 30th! Witch.

CoffeeTea103 · 23/06/2014 13:41

Empire Thanks maybe it will be a surprise double bash Smile

Purplepoodle · 23/06/2014 13:43

No your not but I have young kids so their birthdays take priority. There's often not the money for decent presents for us. We do however try to put time aside and get the inlaws to mind the kids so we can have some us time.

LadyRainicorn · 23/06/2014 13:44

It's not even my birthday today. Just needed to get my love of my birthday (and you know what, love of spoiling my friends and family on their birthdays too) out there!

Let there be Cake!

LadyRainicorn · 23/06/2014 13:46

You budget with whayever funds you have. I've drawn birthday cards. There's breakfast in bed, always getting the tea, etc. Meals don't have to be expensive, but just what the person in question actually would like that day. Like bacon.

Titsalinabumsquash · 23/06/2014 13:49

I'm with you OP Smile

I also get enraged by people that say Christmas (hides) is just for kids. Angry

ChasedByBees · 23/06/2014 13:53

My DH has just texted me with how many sleeps until my birthday and I'm late thirties. Grin I love birthdays.

MaxPepsi · 23/06/2014 14:10

I too love birthdays, most especially mine Grin

I have a 'significant' birthday next year and my DH is already organising things!!

I love doing stuff for other's birthdays and wish adults had more parties!

wafflyversatile · 23/06/2014 14:15

(and you know what, love of spoiling my friends and family on their birthdays too)

Do they love it?

CMOTDibbler · 23/06/2014 14:16

I don't love birthdays tbh. DH gets me something, but thats it - just reminds me that my life is short on people who want to make any effort for me

diddl · 23/06/2014 14:18

I love my bday too!

But expecting presents?

That I don't get tbh.

Viviennemary · 23/06/2014 14:22

If all your family and friends think the same then no problem go ahead and celebrate. I can't be bothered with all this ceremony for adults birthdays. I don't mind a party for a significant birthday. But every year would be just too boring. And as for these office birthdays. Cringe!

Laquitar · 23/06/2014 14:29

I am 100% with you OP!!

Happy birthday !

PrincessOfChina · 23/06/2014 14:33

I am totally with you. I also like celebrating the birthdays of others and weddings. I am a MN weirdo.

LadyRainicorn · 23/06/2014 14:34

Do they love it?

I would only do what people wanted - I ask. If people don't want to do anything I'm not about to decend upon them and make them party hearty.

OP posts:
WyrdByrd · 23/06/2014 14:54

YANBU.

I love my birthday too but need to train DH to be a bit more indulgent.

I have a big one next September and I'm planning to be celebrating for the whole of 2015!
