My DS is due to start Primary 1 in September. He will be 4 years and 2 months and is not ready for it - his concentration span is limited, his speech is still slightly delayed and he still has difficulty sharing at times. There is no option to defer, he legally must start on Sept 1st and so he will. The school are being supportive and he is being assessed for ASD at the minute but AIBU to think that our system needs to change to accommodate the needs of young children who would really benefit from another year at pre-school before entering formal education?

It's a crazy rule. Children her in ROI don't have to start school until they're 6, most start around 5, just turned 4 isn't the norm but they can start from 4 onwards.
