To be irritated that my name is misspelled?

I have recently resigned after 15 years. I know it is not terribly important and probably extremely petty but my name on the resignation acceptance letter has been misspelled. The person who sent me the letter knows who I am so it isn't a mistake by someone in HR who plows through a bunch of these every day.

Just ask for it to be changed, crisis over?

Twitterqueen · 20/06/2014 10:10

People always spell my name wrong and it drives me mad. I hate it. I've tried correcting them - it works for a while and then they revert.

I work for a large company with people from every nation in the world. i spell their names correctly.

Mine isn't that unusual and I think it's just BLOODY LAZY.

isitsnowingyet · 20/06/2014 10:19

It may be bloody lazy, but it sure ain't worth losing sleep (or temper) over. I have a slightly unusual surname and when someone spells it right they are congratulated warmly. If someone misspells it, I just think 'meh - so what' why get ANGRY?

redexpat · 20/06/2014 10:27

YANBU. My Dad got a certificate for 25 years service to his company and they spelled his name incorrectly! How insulting is that?!

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 20/06/2014 11:19

Who cares - You're leaving! Let it wash over you.

partialderivative · 20/06/2014 11:28

What's the difference between 'misspelled' and 'misspelt'?

Neither get red lined by the spell check, so I am guessing there is no difference.

(So sorry for interrupting)

BoomCakesNation · 20/06/2014 11:32

I can understand where you are coming from! My name is consistently mispelt, even when clients reply to my emails which are signed off with the proper spelling AND the email address is my name as well they still do it.
My dp says it's most likely people are used to one spelling so just assume but it's rude and rather disrespectful.
In the big picture maybe not that important but when it's something so integral to your identity it does rankle!
first world problems

YANBU....this drives me bonkers....especially when I send an email with my name at the bottom of the message and in the reply they don't even get the first letter right.....I find it very rude and have been known to ask politely that people spell my name the same way I do

Harry1603 · 20/06/2014 11:33

In principle it doesn't bother me as I'm used to it - my first name can be spelled at least 3 ways as can both my maiden and married names!

I do think it's sloppy though if the person know you.

JoeyMaynardsghost · 20/06/2014 11:35

In my last job there was a culture of pointing out other people's mistakes to their team leader, by email. My team leader would then forward the email to the person with an "ooops" header.

I was once sent an "ooops" and the email itself complained that I had misspelled something (hands up, I had) but they spelled my name wrong in their haste to point the finger!

I promptly replied, cc'ing the original sender and said, "when pointing out a spelling error, it looks far better to not have made any errors yourself, otherwise it just makes you look stupid and just for info, my name is spelled J-O-E-Y"

Made me Grin.

CruCru · 20/06/2014 11:45

Hey that's cool. I think either are okay. A bit liked burned and burnt.

partial the -t and -ed endings difference I believe is just American vs British English and both are accepted.

Think dreamed/dreamt or learned/learnt

Indith · 20/06/2014 11:56

Burn burned burnt
learn learned learnt

I burn
I burned
I have burnt

Burnt is the past participle.

PsychologicalSaline · 20/06/2014 12:12

Lots of people always get the spelling of my name wrong. It used to bother me and I used to email back spelling their names wrong too (petty!) but now I don't bother. My marriage certificate even has my name spelt wrongly!
