To think Star of the Week is a silly idea?

For young kids, a week is a very long time. You end up with kids who think they never get SotW because they can't remember all the way back to early September when they last got it. Doesn't it cause some resentment?

My kids aren't yet in school but I have seen a few and one (of the "desirable" ones) had SotW on someone's school bag hanging in the corridor.

No, I like it as a little way of recognising someone who's had a good week. IME the only people who get wound up by it are parents.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 16/06/2014 18:22

What do you want by desirable?

And what was in the corridor?

Sorry.

I quite like star of the week. They all get a go and seem to have no problem remembering that they won one week.

I am confused at your post!

Anyway we do this in our reception class and keep a list so each child does get it eventually. They love it so no it's great.

The parents can be silly though if their child has to wait a little for it.

Learning good behaviour has a reward is teaching in itself op.

BeachyKeen · 16/06/2014 18:26

OP, what do you mean by desirable ones?

FlimFlamFloo · 16/06/2014 18:27

tbh i want my kids to be competative and realise that you get good things* if you work hard.

  • star of the week, merit points, bonuses at work etc

It's a nice way of rewarding hard work/effort/achievement something all children should be able to achieve.

WooWooOwl · 16/06/2014 18:35

I don't mind it, but for reception I prefer there being a happy face and a sad face in the classroom that children's names can be put on accordingly, and removed at the end of each day so that every new day brings a fresh chance. That way the reward isn't limited to only one child and everyone who deserves recognition gets it, and you don't have to meaninglessly reward children that don't deserve it just because it's their turn.

I'm not the biggest fan of rewards that every child automatically gets, it just doesn't work effectively over the course of a week.

Some children will never have a whole week where they deserve a reward, but they might have a couple of days.
