Jacuzzi at the gym

I go to the gym as often as I can which is mostly about 4/5 times a week. I swim until I get bored then use the spa facilities. However, evey week night there is a gathering of men in the jacuzzi that sit there for at least an hour the same men that hang around in the weights section for 2 hours and seemingly only do 1 rep every 20 mins but make a lot of noise doing it. I know because I see them go in when I get in the pool around 6.30 and are still there when I go and get changed around an hour later. they are quiet intimidating and it has a bit of a pub atmosphere with them being quite loud and sweary and you very rarely see any women in there (there are also a number of men who are of different ages and different ethic backgounds to the all white late 20s / early 30s jacuzzi contingent who also only use the jacuzzi at a weekend but use the rest of the spa area during the week). the spa area is quite a big space with 4 steam room / sauna type rooms and a few other bits and pieces and there are equal numbers of men and women hanging about. Also at a weekend then they're not there the jacuzzi gets used generally by everyone. I enjoy it when I get to go in at a weekend and would like to use it on a weekday.

so I feel I have 3 options...

a - suck it up, they got there first, tough titties
b - grow a pair and ask one of them to get out, beckoning in the sisterhood, the Hindus and the older gentleman to come and join me
c - complain to the gym and ask they they up along the lines of 'at peak hours, this area gets busy, please respect other members by limiting your use so that these facilities can be used by everyone'

WWYD?

The tough part of me thinks option A, the rational side of me says option c. Def not option B though.

flipchart · 30/05/2014 12:24

Maybe c. But this was the reason igaveup my DW membership and went elsewhere.

A friend and I went to our gym pool and jacuzzi on a Sunday night - I felt I was in a totally different facility from the one I normally use. Men very much as you describe hogging the hot tub and younger women in bikinis ( it's more of a swim suit place normally !) It seemed a bit of a pick up joint as far as we could tell, but then we're as old as Methusla so what do we know.

I'd complain to the gym and ask them to put a sign up. They should be getting out of the jacuzzi when the bubbles aren't running as that's when the filtration to clean it out works ( so I have been told), but I certainly wouldn't say anything to them directly. They aren't doing anything specifically wrong, just being a bit selfish.

Bellezeboobian · 30/05/2014 12:59

I would say A.

Hot tub!

that's the word I was looking for. I said jacuzzi but knew there was a modern equivalent but couldn't remember it. Jacuzzi sounds so 80s.

(I'm 30 years old, I really should be cooler than I am) Confused

C. is there a lifeguard at the pool who can monitor it and ask them on your behalf?
(it's like that at my gym. I don't really want to go in after 6 hairy great tattooed big bellied men have been farting away in it for an hour though)

Hairylegs47 · 30/05/2014 13:07

I'd say C.

This has reminded me of the set up at the gym i used to go to. Private gym, lovely facilities, BUT - the hot tub (big enough to seat 10/12 people) was situated right by the steps to the pool, the door to the female changing rooms and the open pool side shower and there were always the same middle aged overweight blokes sat in it ogling the women. No matter what time you went for your swim!

It was a fairly small pool, an intimate sort of space, no life guard, and a loud squeak on the entrance door which kind of announced your arrival. Hated the walk past them. It was like passing a building site in your cozzie.

I find it slightly odd that at the end of a working day a lot of men think 'I can think of nothing I'd like more than right now than having a bath and a chat with a bunch of semi naked relative strangers for a couple of hours'. Get in, shut up, ten mins, relax, get out and carry on living your life.

D'you think it's - well, clean?

We have a largish jacuzzi pool which is always full of similar sounding men. I cant help but think of all those sweaty balls floating in their respective baggy shorts.

Huge brand named gym - but even so?

Testarossa1 · 30/05/2014 16:24

My OH works in the leisure industry with responsibility for the gyms jacuzzi/spa pool and he says because they are kept so warm they just breed germs! It gets tested several times a day and then the chemicals get adjusted according to the results, sometimes it needs double dosing if it's been heavily used and sometimes what he terms flash dosing which is apparently something they do when results are really high. He said they breed germs so fast because it's a relatively small amount of water, not like a swimming pool with gallons and gallons. I would never use a small jacuzzi/spa pool now, especially not after lots of sweaty blokes had been in it!

Vintagejazz · 30/05/2014 16:28

I agree re option c. It's exactly the same at the gym I go to. Loads of men sitting in the Jacuzzi for ages. The fact that it's located just outside the exit of the ladies' changing room so you have to walk past it to get to and from the pool doesn't make it any easier.

ViviPru · 30/05/2014 16:28

Definitely option C, OP. You've nothing to lose. Things like this get me disproportionately angsty.

trixymalixy · 30/05/2014 16:32

I would go for option C. We stayed in a nice spa hotel when we were skiing recently and it drove me nuts that people would selfishly hog the jacuzzi.
