Does your appetite increase just before you get your period?

I'm pretty good at keeping my weight down and I think I have a pretty balanced appetite but I've noticed recently that just before my period I feel so hungry and just eat everything in sight. I have put on about 2 pounds in a week. Is this common? Is it due to hormones or what?

Definitely natural. Apparently you actually need more calories in the week before (not making it up, and I don't know how many more). Should balance itself out. Presumably hormones.

SourSweets · 28/05/2014 09:39

Yes definitely, that's one of the sure signs I'm about to come on.

WillieWaggledagger · 28/05/2014 09:45

oh yes, couple of days before period my appetite ramps up, never feel fully satisfied. i have v little appetite once the period cramps start though

Eatriskier · 28/05/2014 09:47

Definitely. I can eat and eat and not feel satisfied at all in the run up to totm, when normally I'm very good at not eating just for the sake of it.

KeinBock · 28/05/2014 09:48

Yes, absolutely!

MrsKoala · 28/05/2014 09:50

2 days before my period all i want is lots of pasta and am never full. The first 2 days of my period i can barely touch food - i just feel so tired and queasy.

mrsjavierbardem · 28/05/2014 09:54

massively yes!
My friend said I should take vitamin B6 and Evening Primrose oil to reduce this as it is to do with hormonal changes and can reduce the hunger pains.
I just crave sugar in the few days before.

WowserBowser · 28/05/2014 09:55

Yes!! Only really noticed it the last few months. But a definite increase.

eurochick · 28/05/2014 09:57

Yes. I call them my pac man days (probably only relevant to those of you who grew up in the 80s!). I literally walk around the house/office hoovering up everything in my path. I've given up trying to fight it as it just makes me crazed to the point where I can't think about anything other than food. I just go with it now. I have the other 28 days of the month to watch what I eat.

ghostmous3 · 28/05/2014 09:57

Yep i crave sugar and carbs for up to a week before i come on.

RonaldMcDonald · 28/05/2014 09:59

i mainline medjool dates..they are miles worse that choc etc as are about the most sugar laden thing known to woman
cannot resist

UriGeller · 28/05/2014 10:00

I've been reading about this!

During menstruation, a woman’s serotonin levels are at their lowest. And because carbohydrates (via insulin) increase the availability of the premier amino acid precursor to serotonin (tryptophan), craving carbs during your period is totally natural. It probably just means that you are low in serotonin (which, according to the research, you likely are) and your body wants to make more of it.

As for whether or not this is problematic, sports science offers another clue: during the mid-luteal phase (the two weeks leading up to menstruation) when estrogen dominates, the potential for glycogen storage is maximized. What that means is that for two weeks before your period rolls around, your muscles are primed to accept and store carbohydrate as energy (rather than as fat). I wouldn’t suggest you give in to the carb cravings as they typically manifest – muffins, cakes, pizza, cookies – but this might be a better time to eat a few Primal-friendly sources of carbs. Think sweet potatoes, white potatoes, yams, squash, and various types of fruit. Oh, and high-quality dark chocolate, if that’s your thing. The fact that your cravings only surface during your period tells me that you’re in a good place, nutritionally, and that these cravings are physiologically normal.

I crave chocolate and cake just before a period even though I don't normally eat cake.

For me its like cravings in pregnancy where I just have to have it and can't stop thinking about it until I do.

trikken · 28/05/2014 10:14

Yes definitely. Was very hungry yesterday. Wanted everything.

crazykat · 28/05/2014 10:14

I also weigh about 4lb more than normal on the first day of my period which is gone by day 4/5.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 28/05/2014 10:14

Yay, I could eat a scabby horse the week before I'm due on and it stops pretty much the moment I start.

NotADaffodil · 28/05/2014 10:15

God yes,

I dream about bread and pasta carbonara

I don't usually like fizzy drinks but in the days before AF I crave cherry coke too

calculatorsatdawn · 28/05/2014 10:16

absolutely, I can eat my body wieght in pasta the week before the communists enter the white house

gamerchick · 28/05/2014 10:29

God yes.. cars and sweet stuff. The husband always notes when I eat chocolate because that's the only time I do Grin

gamerchick · 28/05/2014 10:30

*carbs

TheresLotsOfFarmyardAnimals · 28/05/2014 10:31

Yep. I simply NEED that chocolate bar as opposed to just really wanting it.

notachicken · 28/05/2014 10:33

UriGeller - I eat a sort of paleo. Last night I had sweet potato with home made beef burger. I just still felt so hungry after that I ate a quarter tub of cottage cheese and loads of tangerines. I also take quite a lot of vitamins already - DLPA which is a dopamine precursor, vitamin d3, magnesium (at night for sleep). But maybe I need to take typtophan or 5htp for serotonin?

brighteyedbusytailed · 28/05/2014 10:37
