to think this site should have a benefits section

I see loads of threads asking benefits questions. There is free face to face advice available but it can be hard to access if you're a stay at home parent or lone parent, especially as these services are in high demand. also some such as CAB are not so good at more complex situations eg: when you have a half share in a property.

Most of the enquiries I got when I worked in the advice sector were from women wanting to know what they could claim to support themselves and their kids if they left their partners, who they relied on financially but didn't have joint access to money :(

So how about a section specifically for these questions - maybe also with links to turn2us, women's aid, and a list of each district's welfare rights organizations and local assistance scheme for emergencies? There is a small section in the "family money" bit of the site but it's very basic.

can you imagine the trolling! it's a good idea in principle

I've seen money matters and a credit crunch area before where such questions would be answered -

No. The benefit threads always end up in chaos and never end up helping the one person who asked for help. If anything, they end up getting flamed for asking innocent questions.

Ooops. Sorry.

Perhaps a finance forum instead.

Benefits, debt advice, budgeting and things like that.

Nobodyputsbabyinthecorne · 24/05/2014 22:14
