To use medicine prescribed for someone else?

DD has just gotten over conjunctivitis. We got two different eye drops from the GP but only used one bottle.

DH has now clearly developed the same thing. No GP til Monday and an unused, not required bottle of antibiotic eye drops in the house. AWBU for DH to use them?

Yes. Don't do it, especially with something as contagious as conjunctivitis.

lucidlady · 16/05/2014 21:03

Oh sorry misread! If unopened, what is the medicine?

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 16/05/2014 21:05

I'd use the medication if it was unopened, no problem

LoonvanBoon · 16/05/2014 21:05

Assuming the bottle is sealed & unused, I'd certainly use it. It's clear your DH has the same complaint - it is v. contagious - so I can't see it would do any harm at all. Obviously don't share a bottle.

You can buy antibiotic eye drops for conjunctivitis OTC now, btw.

I would

For most things I'd say thins of thus sort I would say YABVVU.

But if someone in the house has unmistakeable symptoms of conjunctivis and you have a fit to use bottle of chloramphenicol, then go for it. Bu douse a full course. If it's viral, it makes no difference either way. It if bacterial, important - for his cure and avoidance of good conditions for emerging resistant - to use a full course.

Madratlady · 16/05/2014 21:07

You can buy chloramphenicol eye drops at a pharmacy, if that's what you have you're probably ok.

mrsbug · 16/05/2014 21:08

I did exactly the same thing, took dds eye drops after I caught conjunctivitis from her. I was fine.

happyyonisleepyyoni · 16/05/2014 21:11

Just b careful, has he taken them b4? I had a allergic reaction to chloramphenicol and ended up at the eye hospital
