Subway - Halal issue

CiderLover · 30/04/2014 16:04

I feel a bit annoyed that 200 Subway stores are removing their Ham and Bacon due to requests from their Muslim customers.

I think the process of producing Halal meat is cruel, but obviously that isn't an issue to Subway.

There are plenty of Subway stores that advertise their pork as being Halal so why this? It's not earth shattering stuff but ...

Should I move to a muslim country and want to open a strip club would that be allowed?

Errr, I don't think there is a single Subway anywhere on earth that can advertise their pork as Halal Confused

But it shows that Subway listens to customer feedback. If you want bacon and ham back on the menu, tell them. If enough people do, and it offsets all the people that will only eat there if there is no pork, they might put it back on the menu

FatalCabbage · 30/04/2014 16:09

I doubt their pork is halal. Maybe the chicken.

It's market forces, innit. In that area the number of potential customers who actively seek out halal must outweigh the number who actively avoid halal.

I have a feeling Subways are franchises rather than chains, which would mean it's a very individual and local decision in each case.

Loverdose · 30/04/2014 16:09

Ridiculous if you ask me. No one is forcing Muslims to eat the ham. If I want a big juicy bacon sandwich I'll have one. Not at subway though apparently!

CharlieSierra · 30/04/2014 16:10

There are plenty of Subway stores that advertise their pork as being Halal so why this

There is no such thing as Halal pork, Muslims don't eat pigs.

Cashncarry · 30/04/2014 16:10

What exactly is your AIBU question? Whether eating pork (which can never be halal btw) is equivalent to removing your clothes for money?

If so, yabu.

Also, are you on glue?

gamerchick · 30/04/2014 16:18

It probably wasn't a request.. more like one of those 'must not offend' moments by some arse in a suit.

You've really seen pork advertised as halal? Hmm

CiderLover · 30/04/2014 16:19

Sorry, just read an article on Halal and reading about them not eating Pork and it stuck in my mind as I was typing!

Cashncarry - I am saying that they can impose their religious beliefs in a non muslim country, yet there is no way I could impose my beliefs of umm taking my clothes off in a muslim country :)

Ok bad example but I'm sure you get the jist...?

HannerHet · 30/04/2014 16:20

They have removed pork and bacon from their stores completely and any meat they do sell is halal apparently.

CiderLover · 30/04/2014 16:20

And subway do serve Halal meats - I worked there during my Uni days

The one by my office has always been halal, they have turkey bacon instead of proper bacon. If you think halal is too cruel to eat then you shouldn't be at subway anyway - I doubt their chicken is free range.

sallysparrow157 · 30/04/2014 16:32

I've just looked on the subway store locator for my area. If I search halal only I get 12 stores (bear in mind I live in an area with a high Muslim population). If I search all stores in my area I get 55 stores. So I could get a bacon sandwich in 43 branches of subway within a few miles of my house and a turkey 'bacon' sandwich in 12 branches. Also, according to the subway site, they started doing this in 2007, when they opened a new store they looked at the demographics of the area and decided whether to make it a halal or non halal store.
So basically this is a non-story and I bet the majority of the 'almost 200' (actually 185) halal stores have been halal since they opened as opposed to suddenly deciding to remove ham and bacon.

somewheresomehow · 30/04/2014 16:34

Here we go again bowing down to the minority group. I bet they wouldn't ban meat altogether if a vegetarian objected to them serving ham, chicken etc.

Hoppinggreen · 30/04/2014 16:35

I walked past one at Manchester Picadilly Station today and noticed they were advertising Halal food, which I was surprised at.
To be honest as I would rather lick a bench on the subway than eat a sandwich from Subway it doesn't really bother me either way.

Joysmum · 30/04/2014 16:35

Supply and demand. Nit all subway are halal just like not all will ban pork.

I personally avoid halal and wouldn't go to my local subway if it were halal. I wouldn't boycott it is it didn't serve pork though because I don't go for the pork options and don't see that decision as any different to places that only do veggie options so it doesn't bother me.

sallysparrow157 · 30/04/2014 16:38

They haven't banned non halal meat. They have halal stores and non halal stores. The majority of their stores are non halal. I've found this out with about 30 seconds of googling but obviously it's easier to jump on the daily mail bandwagon of spoilsport Muslims not wanting British people to eat bacon sarnies!

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 16:40

they can impose their religious beliefs in a non muslim country who??? Subway? are Subway muslim then Hmm

I have no issue with Halal meat and I think if you genuinely cared about animals you wouldn't eat meat full stop

We live in a country with over 2 million Muslims - this is their country as well!

SistersOfPercy · 30/04/2014 16:41

No. They haven't.

youvegottabekiddingme · 30/04/2014 16:42

It amazes me how many times I hear ppl say " oh we wouldn't be able to do such and such in a muslim country". How many Muslim countries have you been to op? In the muslim countries I've seen, e.g Malaysia, Dubai (in fact UAE), Indonesia, etc. the non Muslims are as undressed as anywhere in England.

littleducks · 30/04/2014 16:42

Isn't a case of a big chain sees a gap in the market (halal fast food is a growing market) and open stores to fill that gap?

In my town for example there is a halal subway and a non halal subway, a halal nandos and a non halal nandos, a halal KFC and a non halal KFC. They are all labelled pretty clearly and detailed info for each online, seems pretty reasonable to me.

SistersOfPercy · 30/04/2014 16:43

sallysparrow
I checked mine as well, there are 2 locally out of 10 stores, and those 2 stores are in predominantly Muslim areas of the city.

I just can't get excited about this I'm afraid.

Wantsunshine · 30/04/2014 16:46

I won't be going there any more. I used to like a ham and cheese sub. I sometimes got others but will not go back now as I didn't know it was halal and I do not agree with how they are slaughtered.

BarbarianMum · 30/04/2014 16:50

If a business changes the goods or services it offers in response to customer feedback then I personally don't see the problem. If they lose more customers than they gain then I'm sure ham will be back on the menu. In fact I am sure they would serve crispy fried kittens if they thought that they'd sell.

SistersOfPercy · 30/04/2014 16:50

Does anyone actually read before they get outraged? Or do some folk just like getting outraged?

Subway aren't banning pork fgs, some stores are going halal. Some, not all.
Check here, find a store thats not Halal and buy your bacon butty from there. Its THAT simple.

CiderLover · 30/04/2014 16:50

who??? Subway? are Subway muslim then

The Muslim community!
