dirty sports clothes

AIBU to tell DS (almost 18, still in full time education and living at home) that I won't give him a lift to his sports event tomorrow unless he washes his sports clothes first? He doesn't have any other way of going if I don't take him and his team is counting on him but he thinks it is perfectly fine to wear clothes he already worked out in because he only wore them for less than an hour (www!)

He thinks I am being complete U essentially forcing him to do what I want. I feel that if he wants my help and support and me standing there watching with the other parents then he shouldn't smell. I will be giving up about five hours to take him to this thing so I don't think it is really expecting much for him to do one load of laundry.

Just stick them in the machine yourself.

at 18 he is more than old enough to decide himself, if he is happy wearing them then leave him to it.

Yabvu and a little strange. Would you not think its up to him what to wear and be glad hes invokved in sport.

If he wore them for less than an hour and they haven't been stuffed in a plastic bag for a fortnight, why on earth shouldn't he wear them again?

Is this another one of those things where I discover that I am on another planet to everyone else?

I think yabu. A bit. I frequently wear sports kit two or three times. I would however, wear a clean set for an 'event' i think.

No way I'd be happy with DH wearing kit from a 45 minute gym session on a subsequent day. If your offer of a lift comes with conditions, ie clean kit, that's fine IMO. At 18 he ought to be doing more than just one load of laundry.

What terribly fastidious people you all are. Do you expect anyone you give a lift home to after work showers and changes before you let them in the car?

This really, really wouldn't bother me in the slightest!!! Seriously, he's worn it for an hour - if he showers frequently, the kit shouldn't smell. Besides, he's 18, an adult. Don't attach conditions like this before you do him a favour, it's borderline controlling.

This short amount of time he wore the kit - did it involve wading through a muddy river, rolling in poo or wetting himself? Because if not, they're probably fine to wear again.

I'm guessing that if the op is that bothered by it, the clothes do smell and she doesn't want to put up with her ds smelling her car out.

And if he's 18, why should she do it herself? If he wants a lift, he should do as he's asked, he doesn't like the conditions, find another way to get there

My husband gets very sweaty and his clothes DO stink after one wear, even if he's worn them less than an hour - they're still sportswear! I don't think it's unreasonable to insist on a clean set if you're going to be in close proximity to him for any length of time. It's only common courtesy really. If someone is doing you a massive favour then you should try to make it less unpleasant for them surely.

In this house, sportswear isn't necessarily washed every time it's used. Does your son's kit smell unpleasant? Are you concerned what other people might think?

YABU - if it doesn't bother him (and I presume that most kit can be worn again if only worn for an hour - but haven't stood in close proximity to theis set) then let him get on with it.
If you genuinely don't think you can be in the car with this kit, then throw it in the machine yourself - it's not that hard.

I wash my gym kit when I notice it smells, probably about every 4 or so wears. Because otherwise the washer would be on constantly, the kit would get knackered from being washes every other day, and also it would get sweaty within about 5 minutes of me putting it on anyhow.

Do other people seriously wash their kit every time they go to the gym?

You are being a bit over fussy. Either wash them yourself or just put up with it. They can't be that bad if he only wore them for an hour.

Can I just add my dh sports clothes absolutely stink, to the point that I don't want them in the normal laundry bin and they don't go in the wash with other clothes, they have their own separate load. So no op, yanbu

thanks for the feedback, seems mixed, some one way, some the other.

He works out pretty hard and it does get really stinky at times and then my car smells like boy for a day or two and I have to spend an hour in close quarters with BO.

He washes his own clothes, so I wouldn't be washing them.
