Thinking about donating to foodbank. AIBU to be dubious

OK, I know I'm probably being unreasonable here.
I've been thinking about donating to the foodbank, but I'm in two minds. It's a self referral one. That means you can rock up and declare food for yourself without being referred. How does that even work?! How do you go about proving you're in need and can't feed yourself?
Sorry in advance for stupid questions.

OP posts:

Monty I know some people like you have offered useful information, but the vast majority are just attacking the op, which is rather unhelpful.

This is aibu though, so its hardly surprising.

Monty27 · 13/03/2014 01:29

Splash as I say, wrong place. It must be hurting the needy this thread. :(

Monty27 · 13/03/2014 01:30

Hell rub it up those that abuse the system, but as I say, the non self referral banks would be hard to abuse I'm sure.

redrubyindigo · 13/03/2014 01:33

I put in food, Tampax, Sanitary towels, nappies and toiletries.

livingatheendofthewall · 13/03/2014 01:45

Give without judgement or don't give at all. The Gov/BBC have got you brainwashed with their propaganda haven't they?

DioneTheDiabolist · 13/03/2014 01:46

There are no guarantees in life OP. How much faith do you have in your foodbank? How much faith do you have in humanity?

Bogeyface · 13/03/2014 01:50

Not read the whole thread but locally you dont have to be on benefits to ask for help. In fact there was an article in our local paper just recently about how many families with at least one working member asking for food parcels has gone up far more than those on benefits.

We are in a town that has many many warehouses and distribution centres and they all work on 0 hour temp contracts, so you can technically have a job but not get any income. You try living like that. I have had to do it for over a year now thanks to redundancy from a failing sector and it aint fun. Thanks to well off and understanding parents I havent had to go to a food bank, but without their support I can think of at least 2 times in the last 3 months that I would have had to ask for food parcels.

Bogeyface · 13/03/2014 01:51

Give without judgement or don't give at all

This. Perfectly put and a motto to live by.

Monty27 · 13/03/2014 01:56

Well said Bogey they're known as the working poor :(

Those that are job seeking are poor too.

Food banks are run voluntarily from what I know, unlike some other charitable organisations.

Ninehoursahead · 13/03/2014 01:56

I just don't get the questioning.
I work for a church (I'm overseas) We do not give out money, but we have a food cupboard. If people come to the office and ask for help, we give them food. We don't ask why, or how or what. We just give it.
We do other things but this is the main thing I have any involvement in. And it's just done, no questions asked. So if you want to donate just do it, don't ask why or where or who.

NigellasDealer · 13/03/2014 01:58

yes well like someone else said, OP and others have been brainwashed into thinking that there is the 'deserving poor' and the 'undeserving poor' who live a life of milk honey and free fags all paid for by 'us the taxpayers'.
honestly people are so gullible.

NinjaLeprechaun · 13/03/2014 02:05

Give without judgement or don't give at all
Screw that. Judge me all you want. I don't care as long as my children are fed. Wink

Honestly, it doesn't matter where the help comes from, or why, the only thing that matters is that it comes. Whether you want to give to a food bank because you see a genuine need or because it helps you feel smug doesn't matter a bit, either way the food goes to the same people with the same need.

Monty27 · 13/03/2014 02:07

Nigella they fall for anti-poor media crap, because they can't work things out for themselves.

Such is life :(

NigellasDealer · 13/03/2014 02:10

Monty27 · 13/03/2014 02:14

swingyourpantsnow

You are starting to grate on me now!

You replies since my comment have been relating to the only negatives (which are the tiny% on this thread)

You obviously have no interest in hearing the facts and want only the replies that make you feel better about not bothering because you don't actually seem to want to donate.

Just so you know (been years and years since I needed) when I was homeless as a young teen (because escaping abusive family) I relied on food donations.

I was very embarrassed but had no choice then I met someone like you! I felt judged and ashamed because I didn't look poor enough! Although I had less than a pound in my pocket!

Don't donate, I thought at first you were just ignorant about how they worked now I know your just another judgmental horror who make people who were in my situation feel like dirt even though they know nothing about the hardships that were forced upon the individuals.

I'm quite disgusted with you to be honest

NigellasDealer · 13/03/2014 02:18

Smile thank u monty

ScrambledeggLDCcakeBOAK · 13/03/2014 02:18

And by the way guys there is no point she is ignoring every post that does not fit what she wants to hear!

You've all been giving practical answers to her questions and she pretty much blanked most of them

Bogeyface · 13/03/2014 02:19

wibu to take a job overseas and leave all this crap behind? seriously?

Nope

ScrambledeggLDCcakeBOAK · 13/03/2014 02:22

nigella one day you'll look back at this time and be happy that you were there as it taught you some great lessons (if your anything like me)

I'm sorry your finding it hard love it's crap being where you are just now!

Keep your chin up!

Sending you helpful vibes xxx

NigellasDealer · 13/03/2014 02:23
