Regarding preconception advice?

My friend is a doctor, she advised me to see my to regarding preconception check up and immunisations after my folic acid tablets fell out onto her when she grabbed some paracetamol. She told me that it was very important especially as I worked where I could easily pick up something.

Checked NHS website, this one and a few others and called my gp up to ask directly.

I was asked by the receptionist is I had something wrong with me because she really didn't see why I was calling. When I explained that I just wanted clarification she went on about how she'd never heard of it and muttered some other things that make me feel like a bit of an idiot for taking my friends advice. She was.pretty condescending and actually sighed before saying she would pass it to doctor.

Aibu to feel confused and a bit embarrassed, I feel like I was being precious and wasting gp time. I would never have bothered with one if my doctor friend hadn't been so sure I needed one.

I haven't a fucking clue about any of this stuff.

Well,all a GP would say is don't smoke, don't drink too much, take folic acid and have sex a lot. I don't really see how it's needed unless you have pre existing problems or an alcoholic etc.

No I don't have any. That's what I was going for happily but my friend seemed very sure I should have an appointment and she's not normally so pushy so I figured perhaps my not having a clue meant she was right.

YAsortofBU to be confused and embarrassed. You should be feeling annoyed with the receptionist who was rude and unprofessional.

A doctor (or probably even a nurse with aproriate specialism) could go over your medical history and your lifestyle and let you know what is recommended. Nevertheless, the vast majority of people get pregnant without that and do just fine. The medical profession can be a bit intervention focused, sometimes to excess, and stressing about pregnancy isn't good for you either!

I think what your friend should have done is advise you to do a lot of research, and go to the GP if you needed anything specific (e.g., a specific immunisation). That way you could call up and say, I need X, specifically.

I imagine the vast majority of women don't do a preconception checkup and it's not something a busy GP's office will prioritise. Obviously the receptionist shouldn't have been rude to you though.

Thank you all. My friend isn't normally so pushy but she is very keen on doing everything 'right'. I wish I'd hidden the bloody tablets better but I had no idea she would need some paracetamol the moment she walked in and I'd forgotten they were in the same medical box.

The receptionist did add to the embarrassment though tbh im used to her being pretty bruske. She once shouted across the surgery to another admin staff member if they had the prescription for my dad rectal tear ready yet, by name and stating the prescription. My mother wasn't impressed but receptionist just shrugged. She's always been a bit like that, very pushy wanting all the personal details- I once had to explain why I thought I had bv and not thrush. So im usually ok with her being that way, think it was because I am just a bit confused.

I wish I had been tested for immunity to chicken pox before I got pregnant as I'd have had the vaccination if I'm not immune ( my mum can't remember if I have had chicken pox)

Could you look into getting a pre-conception appointment privately if you really want one?

I had to get my rubella immunity checked as my GP said that it can diminish over time. If I hadn't remembered (vividly) having the chicken pox she would have checked for that too.

I had a preconception appointment with my GP as I take a few regular drugs and wanted to know whether they were safe to continue whilst pregnant, how to treat my allergies etc. Nobody seemed shocked that I had asked for one, and my GP didn't give any hint that I was wasting his time. I imagine that having a job which places you at risk of infection would be seen as a good enough reason to ensure you are taking proper precautions at work - an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and all that!

I got an "Thinking of having a baby" leaflet from the NHS. That advises a rubella immunity test. I had one before my first pregnancy. Didn't bother with second baby as I already knew I was immune.

Big Mistake!

Found out at 8 weeks pg I wasn't immune anymore cue very stressful pregnancy.
