To see how long I can leave the bin until DH empties it?

There is just me and DH, no DCs.
I do the washing, cooking and ironing. He empties the bins and washes up. We have a cleaner for the rest of it. We both work full time.

The bin in the bathroom is overflowing. There are things on the floor. But I'm refusing to empty it because it's not my job. I have emptied all the bins the last two times it's needed doing and I'm not doing it again.
Am I being unreasonable? Should I just suck it up and empty it? It's making me twitch every time I use the bathroom.

I do the same with the recycling box, it piles up and we all just balance bits on top until he breaks and finally empties it into the bag outside Grin

WorraLiberty · 08/03/2014 14:25

Is he not home?

Next time he's in, just point to it and ask him to empty it.

Pipbin · 08/03/2014 14:26

I have just done the recycling box. Again his job. He leaves it until it is completely overflowing and then bitches about how difficult it is.

Just ask him?

Pipbin · 08/03/2014 14:27

I mentioned it today and he said he would do it. Nothing so far.

I could go months without emptying it in this situation.

I learnt the great skill of passive aggressive ignoring housework living with horrible people as a student.

gordyslovesheep · 08/03/2014 14:31

oh just empty the thing

I dislike all the 'your job my job' thing - if it needs doing do it - and ask him to adopt the same attitude

Ah bin buckaroo we play that here to! :/

NewNameForSpring · 08/03/2014 14:40

You are already doing more than him judging by your split of chores listed above. I think you should address this before more rot sets in.

I suggest a short and assertive discussion reminding him how each of you has to do their share otherwise it frankly isn't fair and reflects badly on the selfish bastard slower one.

I do do more than him but I like cooking, so that's not a chore really.

That's known as 'student house bin' - more and more stuff gets shoved in and compacted until it makes it nigh on impossible to get the bin liner out when someone does eventually crack and try to empty it.

You realise you won't win, don't you OP.
We have a bin in the bedroom. It is just by the door so you can't fail to notice how full it is as you walk in and out of the room. DH never empties it. He is very good at filling it up - think bent over wire coat hanger and plastic cover off suit from dry cleaners, but never ever empties it. Clearly he thinks the bin fairy does it.

Pipbin · 08/03/2014 20:08

He's done it!
I wonder if he's a secret MN reader?

Me and my DH have separate bathrooms.
He is so messy that I refuse to share one with him!! Grin

The bin in his bathroom is always overflowing and there's usually crap all over the floor - thankfully it's his problem and not mine Grin

missmagnum · 08/03/2014 20:29

Yanbu but whenever I try and do this, I end up just having days of getting annoyed about it, instead of one brief annoyance and doing it. I have decided life is too short and not to do these tests anymore, he always fails them...although that's probably because he knows I'll end up doing it!

Glad he has finally done it.

StealthPolarBear · 08/03/2014 20:33

I used to work away overnight.tuesday morning I would leave tje kitchen pristine. Wednesday I would come back to it cleanish and tidyish but ths bin would be full to overflowing. Having just had a 13 hour day followed by a two hour drive, seeing my tissue bounce out of the bin literally drove me to tears. Anyway I told him this and he started making the effort so not sure how much help that is sorry.

lljkk · 08/03/2014 20:34

I think I'd stop cooking for him, gets the msg thru faster.

zeno · 08/03/2014 20:36

The trick is to use a stapler when you need to add something to the heap.

We have this with the laundry in the airing cupboard - Mexican stand off about emptying it until some unlucky soul gets a clean laundry shower when opening the door, or is forced into it by needing a fresh towel from behind the tightly packed clothing stacks.

Jolleigh · 08/03/2014 20:37

Pointedly leave a new bin bag on top of the toilet seat. Works here (the bathroom is my job but the bins are not!)

softlysoftly · 08/03/2014 20:53

The only argument me and MIL ever had was when DD1 was little. My kitchen bin was overflowing and there were at least 3 Black binliners full on the floor due to bin wars!

She told me I had a dirty house and needed to sort it out. My response "it's your son's ONE JOB perhaps if you'd ever made him clean ONCE there would be no binliners!"

Bins got done that night Grin

Now when he doesn't do it I dump all the rubbish on the front door step for when he gets back from work (around 2am) pisses him off as he's too ashamed of making us look scratty to the neighbours to ignore it.

lola88 · 08/03/2014 20:56

I refused to empty the recycling for 2 weeks I just piled it until the pile was taller than me eventually I got fed up and told him to empty it but luckily the 6 trips down 2 flights of stairs taught him a lesson :)

HadABadDay2014 · 08/03/2014 21:06

I chucked the sodding bin out, it took a month before DH cracked and bought a new one as he was sick of going outside to place small bits of his rubbish out.

I didn't care I was going outside any way.
