To think DC being innocent is a good thing?

Just moved to new area. Bit rough but kids are kids right?
DC playing out for first time (8&5).
Another kid asked DC who they live with. DC2 replied "mum, I don't have a dad". This kids replies "your mum must be a lesbian then".
DC1 "what's a lesbian?"
Cue giggles and teasing and me abruptly opening front door.
I've always valued my kids innocence and believed kids grow up too young these days. But am I setting them up to fail? And get teased?
At school the kids seem more innocent than round here.

Err as 50% of children are brought up in fatherless homes, I doubt 50% of mothers are lesbians. I wouldnt be letting a 5yo play out, let alone in a new are when nights are still short

Well, I don't think that knowing what a lesbian is means they lack innocence.

But I see what you mean broadly speaking. I almost fell over when I heard two girls who couldn't be more than 12 talking about blow jobs the other week.

in my book, same as knowing what a hetrosexual is ... no need to know anything sexual at that age

I know DD is young to play out at 5, hence why DC1 was there and they only went out for 10 mins and remained in my sight. Hence me over hearing conversation.

knowing what a lesbia is is no different than knowing about boyfriends/marriage and it's not about innocence it's about being open-minded.

perhaps the other child's parents are gay? hence why he's aware of the ancient social phenomena of homosexuality?

Surely the answer to that question is "A woman who has another woman as her girlfriend or wife". Where is the loss of innocence if you answer your child's question?

Well to be fair at 8 I would have been talking about families coming in many forms, MM MD DD D alone M alone, etc

They cover LGBT in yr 5/6 sex ed iirc

Both my DC know about gay relationships. ( 7 and 4)

Their uncle is gay, so they have 2 uncles who love each other like mummy and daddy.

Is it the word lesbian or the children not knowing about gay relationships.

My children knew what a lesbian was way before aged 5, it's a bit hard for them not to when their brother's mum is gay and married to another woman. I don't see why that means a loss of innocence? They just know that sometimes men marry/live with women, and sometimes 2 men or 2 women live together. Or sometimes they live with no one.

My dd, who is 9, has recently told me that she identifies as a lesbian.

All her friends have crushes on boybands and whatever, she has crushes on girlbands, all her friends think some male pop stars are cute, she thinks some female pop stars are cute.

She is no more, or less 'innocent' than anyone else in her class.

Knowing what the word lesbian means doesn't mean they know anything sexual.

Although imo by the ages of 5 and 8 they should at least know the basics anyway.

I did explain to him. I guess it was the teasing etc or something that surprised me.
