to be angry & disappointed?

Was bf my 13mo dd in a bf room at a shopping centre at the weekend. There were 2 other mums in there when a 3rd walked in with a tiny baby. She sat down opposite me & started feeding. She
looked at my dd & said "oh" in a strange tone, then asked how old she was. I told her & she said "well, I certainly
won't be abusing my son like you are - he won't be feeding off me after 6 weeks".

I was genuinely shocked & didn't know how to respond. We had already finished feeding so I just smiled, said "thanks for your opinion" and walked out.

AIBU to feel angry & disappointed at the word abusing? I am not a massive bf supporter - I do it, but I understand others can't/don't want to/have moved on. I am still aghast that she said it in a designated bf room Blush

Folk are v strange

MrsMoon76 · 03/03/2014 15:51

What a bitch. Its too late to do anything but I would be pissed off too.

I don't have kids btw but there is nothing wrong with bf a 13 month old.

MostlyMama · 03/03/2014 15:51

What a nasty cow, you're not abusing her at all! What a thing to say to you! FWIW doesn't WHO recommend breastfeeding till 2yo?

'Abusing' wow....

2tiredtocare · 03/03/2014 15:52

You poor thing, what a shitty (and untrue) thing to say. My MIL was a bit Hmm when I BF my DS over 6 months saying he'd become breast obsessed I simply asked her to explain my breast obsessed FF DH.

AlpacaLypse · 03/03/2014 15:53

Well done for not flying off the handle to her incredibly rude and ignorant remark.

Were you aware of the response from the other two mums or did you just want to get the hell out?

Yes. I must admit to still being a bit upset now. Not that I think I'm doing anything wrong, but more that someone who is a bf mum could be so vicious about it.

None of the other mums said anything, but then it was directed at me, although she said it very matter-of-factly (great use of -ly Wink) so perhaps she didn't mean it to be so harsh? I don't know, I'm Shock

The woman clearly was an idiot, ignore it. Nobody with any intelligence would mention it as abuse.

YoureAShoe · 03/03/2014 16:03

Where I live actually people come out with this shit all of the time. I think the people calling you a liar are being bloody ridiculous tbh.
Well done you for breastfeeding your baby at all let alone carrying on until you're both ready to stop, it's a wonderful thing and not easy at all (I stopped breastfeeding after a few days Sad)
Ignore them, not abuse in the slightest.

I could well believe it as I had similar comments from complete strangers. I fed ds2 for 3 years, quick call ss!

Adeleh · 03/03/2014 16:35

What an ignorant bitch! Try not to let it get to you.

shoofly · 03/03/2014 16:37

I could well believe it after some of the remarks I had. After Ds2 turned 1 - I never fed him in front of people - I was a bit fragile and after 2-3 shitty remarks I'd had enough. I fed him until he was 18 months and he self weaned then - but always at home (mostly morning and evening then anyway so no big deal)

You know she is an offensive knob - but the hardest thing in that sort of the situation is all the stinging retorts you think of after the fact. Ignore and move on.

Adeleh · 03/03/2014 16:45

Oh and what You'reAShoe said about people suggesting you're lying about it.

I don't think you are lying but struggle to think of a stranger saying anything like this really.

eggsandwich · 03/03/2014 16:53

I'd of told her to next time choose your words very carefully.
