How the hell do you keep on top of roots?

It's £40 a time at the hairdressers to do my roots and my hair grows so quickly the grey roots are visible after 6 weeks (I'm only 30!). How do you do it? I don't want to dye all my hair every time otherwise it will go like a brush but how do you just do the roots?

My hair is naturally dark blonde so I never have a huge contrast between my hair and the dye. Couldn't be bothered with a roots making an appearance 3 weeks after a hair appointment.

I would love to be able to colour my hair at home, but trying to do a mix of blonde and brown highlights on a DIY basis would probably be catastrophic. And expensive to put right.
