Feeling terribly anxious about ds's operation tomorrow. :-(

Someone come and tell me I ABU and need to harden up, but I'm am such an anxious mess tonight. Tomorrow my little boy has a small operation, he has hypospadius (a condition where the urethra/wee-hole comes out under the penis rather than the end). He has a rather mild version so operation is mainly circumcision with a little bit extra and shouldn't take more than 45 minutes but I'm really, really anxious about it, more the anaesthetic than anything else! Makes me feel silly as I have friends and family whose babies and little ones have been through hell and back with huge operations and life threatening conditions, so I just don't feel I've the right to worry about a little operation, but nervous wreck.

It's only natural to feel like this. My DS had an endoscopy recently under general anaesthetic. I was jim dandy until the very moment he went under and then I was a gibbering fool. He was only out for 20 minutes or so but I was desperate for him to come back round.

He'll be FINE and so will you, but it won't stop you worrying. Good luck to you both.

Of course you are anxious, you are a loving parent! Don't beat yourself up over this, just keep thinking "in 24 hours it will all be over"

Totally normal to be apprehensive.

But he'll be fine. This time tomorrow it'll all be over and he'll be on the road to recovery. Children are very brave, practical and resilient. I think it's us adults who aren't all those things!

Good luck for tomorrow, but it'll be fine.

It is your job to worry. It doesn't matter if its major surgery or having a filling!!

All the stats in the world won't make you worry less but complications are rare and more likely if you are having major or emergency surgery, are overweight, a smoker or have any other illnesses.

He may feel a bit ill / wobbly / teary after the op for a bit and will want you close.

Totally normal to be anxious! I was up all night worrying for a week before my DS had a tooth out!

He WILL be fine. The most that will happen if he reacts badly to the GA is puking a bit afterwards. Anything more serious is virtually unheard of these days. It's really very, very, very safe.

You are very normal! I'd be exactly the same as you, it's natural to worry about your children :)
He will be fine, maybe a little sicky when he comes round (and possibly a little bit beyond), but not much else.
It's for the greater good. How old is he?

Yanbu, both mine have had ops and GA for various reasons and every time I have worried. It's a natural mummy reaction.

Not sure how old your DS is but my DD had a GA at 2yo when she managed to slice through her wrist and needed a ligament reconstruction. You're right, the scary bit was the anaesthetic but honestly it was nowhere near as bad as I expected.
The anaesthetist came to talk to me before and explained the procedure. He said he'd hold the mask over her mouth and she might cry and struggle a bit - at which point I imagining how awful it would be. Actually it wasn't bad at all, I just held her in my arms, she wriggled a bit and then it was like she was asleep. Try not to worry.

My ds1 had his first general anaesthetic when he was 4 months. He's had 3 altogether, the last when he was 4.6 years, and the worry didn't lessen at all. It's normal and shows you are doing exactly what parents are meant to do. All the best for tomorrow.

YADNBU, it's natural to worry whether it's for an illness or a procedure. I hope everything goes well, they'll look after him so try not to worry.

Of course you're are anxious, you're his mum. DS had an orchidopexy to correct an undescended testicle when he was 9 months. It was only 45 mins but it felt like a lifetime. The anaesthetic was better than I had thought, probably bec I had the utmost confidence in the team looking after him, who were lovely. He slept a lot when he woke up, basically woke up, drank some milk, went back to sleep again, woke up for more milk and fell asleep again. He surgeon said that was exactly what he should be doing. The next day he was trying to push his buggy round the park again, despite them telling me to try and keep him as still as possible. Operation was a complete success as I'm sure yours will be tomorrow. Good luck.

Is he going to have a catheter? If so, post and I can give you some advice.

Don't worry, you need to just be his mum. The anaesthetist will talk to you beforehand about what to expect. Be his mum - hold him, reassure him. It's a bit weird once they are under, but it will be ok.

Afterwards keep an eye on his pain meds as some hospitals forget. Be prepared to watch the clock and remind. And time the removal on a canula with optimal pain relief. No matter what they say, that fucking hurts.

It's ok to be worried, I was when my ds needed an op.
It'll be ok and he'll be back on the ward, telling you he's starving and want's to go home in no time :)

Totally normal to be worried. One thing to mention, sometimes ppl can vomit a lot and be very confused and distressed after coming round from a Ga. The distress was a bit like a night terror. My son did after his gromits were put in and adenoids taken out.
It is possible to put some medication in a drip if the child keeps being sick, it stops the vomiting and calms. My son stopped being sick and slept. When he woke up he was totally fine and happy.
Hopefully it won't happen for your Ds. And reassuringly my Ds didn't remember coming round at all. He just remembered all the ice cream he was allowed to eat!

My son had that operation, I was terrified. Holding him while he went to sleep before theatre was the worst bit, but he was fine and the operation went really well.

The aftercare was quite difficult. My son was on frequent antibiotics and his dressings made nappy changing awful. That lasted about 10 days.

It is normal to be anxious, but all will be well. Best of luck.

Hi all, thanks for the wishes and luck. We're home now and he was a little star. Was really chilled, was surprisingly calm going in for anaesthetic, came round well, ate and drank within the hour and now snuggling on sofa watching dvds. Hoping it just all heals well now. Thank you all for support, I was extremely anxious but made sure I remained upbeat for ds. X
