to be annoyed by facebook raffles?

One of my facebook friends has started a group raffling items such as android tablets etc she is charging £5 a number (1-49) or 3 for £10 which will net her at least £165. Ive googled the prize which is selling on amaxon for £43.00! Is it wrong that I want to call all the people buying numbers knobheads?

Sounds like a nice money making scheme. Is she declaring it to the taxman? Or is it for charity?

I thought it was illegal to hold raffles without a (not sure if this is the correct licence) gaming licence.

If it was for charity I wouldnt mind so much its not even the fact shes doing it its the fact that people are actually paying for it! Over christmas there was a 6 crates of beer raffle and even a £200 cash raffle at £10 a ticketfor 49 numbers! Grrrrr! maybe I need to get a life!

You don't need a licence to hold a raffle, we do them at our WI every month, but the proceds go to charity

I thought you had to have a licence to hold a raffle as well - I know when we run the Christmas/summer fayres at school we have to get a licence for the big prize raffle

you do need a licence we had to stop doing them at work because we dont have one.

You can hold them if every tickets a winner though so we changed to just a tombola

There are loads of groups etc on Facebook that do this. It is against facebook rules and if Facebook gets wind of it she will find her account closed.

I think you can run a raffle as a one-off thing with tickets sold on the day and drawn at the event. (Covers the WI evening meeting sort of raffle), but anything going on for more than the day I think needs it - the big school raffle with tickets sold in advance to people who aren't going to be at the event for instance.

First of all I think she's being a cheeky mare but if people want to waste £5 on the chance to win a tablet then more's the fool to them.

Secondly, what she's doing is both against Facebook rules and illegal. You can hold raffles as long as you
a) hold it on the day with tickets sold there and then and the prize drawn then (probably to prevent fraud or whatever)
b) give the proceeds to charity (this is why schools get around this as well as WI etc)

Otherwise you need a gaming license. Clearly she's not doing a) or b) and has no gaming license, I'd warn her before she gets in trouble.

I have exactly the same on my Facebook and she is making double what it's worth on the shop but funnily enough it's the same people who win and are spending at least 50 quid everyday all week on getting numbers it's ridiculous who has that much money to waste... Must be nice lol

Lots of scamming goes on with these. I know of a few groups where it was always the same people who "won" and lo and behold, they were friends of the organiser Hmm. Or other groups where people won but didn't ever receive the prize and the organiser disappeared. Personally I just avoid them and don't get involved.
