about losing my voice (ungrateful alert)

Feel bad writing this. But I am ill in bed with bad chest infection and I've lost my voice. I can't raise it above a whisper, even if I try.

DH is at home today looking after toddler

He keeps shouting up the stairs 'are you alright?' or 'we're just going out ok?' and when I don't reply: 'I said, darling...we're going out, ok?'.

I CAN'T FUCKING SPEAK!! How hard is this to understand?

So then I have to hoist my grumpy self out of bed, stand on top of the landing, bang on wall with slipper to make him look up and give him an inane thumbs up

He wouldn't be getting a thumbs up from me, he would be getting a two finger salute.

Sorry you feel ill, be as grumpy as you like.

Do you have a mobile phone handy? You could text him your answer!

Would text but he's one of those annoying types who doesn't get what the 'mobile' bit means in phone. It's plugged in next to me in the bedroom!

i think you need a little bell you can ring to summon him when you need something...

Aha! Toddler has one of those little shaky sleigh bell toys...

Just don't answer, let him come up to see why! Then remind him you can't talk! Wouldn't catch me getting out of bed to reply if I was in your state!

I'm in the same state, and nothing - but nothing - is more irritating... My family kept ringing me up, and when there was no voice on the phone they did the whole, 'Sue - are you there? Are you there??' bit.

Then I sent everyone a very terse text or email asking which bit of I HAVE NO VOICE they didn't understand... The penny dropped and the texts started - OP, next time, wait until he looks up and then throw something hard at his head..!

It continues. DH had to work this eve so MIL round to do bath and bedtime - lovely and helpful yes, I know, I am grateful. I am properly ill though.

But how many times does she want to shout across the hallway from toddlers room, 'do you think he needs a vest' 'shall I brush his teeth' etc etc. and each and every time I've had to get up! Come and ask me!! Or just do what you think is right, you've done it enough times babysitting

Oh, I feel your pain. Am exactly the same here - laryngitis (and sinusitis and chest infection) and the whole bloody family are attempting to communicate with me by shouting up the stairs.

I'm ignoring them unless they're offering drinks

Poor you. I lost voice a while ago. Not fun. Dh was exactly the same. Kept asking me if I wanted anything etc. shouting at me. Calling me.

Frustrating.

I was given a bicycle horn. Beeped it every time I wanted something (every ten minutes or so). Suggest you do the same.
