To feel really uncomfortable with this Avon perfume marketing

Idly flicking through the latest Avon catalogue, and came to page 76/77, a double spread for a perfume called Secret Fantasy. The strapline is "sweet. innocent. warm".

It uses this photo. In the catalogue, the model looks even more childlike.

It gives me the creeps, especially when coupled with the perfume name and strapline.

WIBU to write to Avon pointing out that this is at the very least verging on inappropriate? Or am I overreacting?

Dunno really. I wouldn't have read much into it other than normal advertising dream selling bullshit, but I am a gossip of very little brain.

Branleuse · 08/02/2014 20:36

overreacting

PansOnFire · 08/02/2014 20:37

That's awful, YWNBU to write to them.

CoffeeTea103 · 08/02/2014 20:38

Ott much? Can't see anything wrong really.

Innogen · 08/02/2014 20:39

Overreacting.

DanceParty · 08/02/2014 20:39

Sex sells. Always has, and always will. They will get away with brushing as 'close to the line' as they can. This is an example of that.

Fishandjam · 08/02/2014 20:40

coffeetea, I did say I might be overreacting Smile

She looks about 12 and heavily eroticised - YANBU!

frankyboop · 08/02/2014 21:10

I don't think YABU, she looks like a child! Shock

Darkesteyes · 08/02/2014 21:12

She does look very young. I remember the Avon of the 80s Totally different. I wish they would bring back their Occur fragrance.

LurcioLovesFrankie · 08/02/2014 21:15

Weird strapline. I would of thought most women wear perfume to make themselves feel sexually attractive - so why the hell market it with the word "innocent"? That's just bizarre.

The photo you've linked to looks like a woman in her early 20s, though, so I'm not particularly freaked out by that.

PoppyAmex · 08/02/2014 21:17

the text is in Portuguese and it very clearly claims it's aimed at "sexy young girls" not women. Horrible.

YANBU

steff13 · 08/02/2014 21:19

The model's name is Courtney Vogler, and she's 16. I don't agree with the sexualizing of teenagers, but fashion models are typically young teenagers, aren't they? She's been a model since she was 12, certainly her parents bare some of the blame for her being sexualized.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 08/02/2014 21:20

YANBU. It made me a little uneasy too. Labelling a young girl as a "Secret Fantasy".

specialsubject · 08/02/2014 21:26

she is very young, models are dumped and dirt by the time they are 25 unless famous for something else.

But what are you expecting from a cosmetics company? Sense? Intelligence?

meanwhile I am supposed to be a grownup and so am not going to snigger childishly at the no-doubt-phone-induced substitution of 'bare' for 'bear'....

steff13 · 08/02/2014 21:31

Oh my gosh, I'm on my laptop, I can't even blame anything by my dumb fingers mising up the letters.

steff13 · 08/02/2014 21:32

mixing! Oh my goodness!

ThisIsMyRealName · 08/02/2014 21:32

I think you are probably not BU.

It's the use of the word 'innocent' that makes me a bit Hmm. If not for that I probably wouldn't have thought anything of it. Although she does look young.
