fence dilemma

We have just had to replace five fence panels after the stormy weather, and they are that awful orange colour, standing out terribly next to the old ones, which are that nice faded grey colour old wood goes. I can't stand the sight of the fence now and would like to paint the whole thing with either dark brown or maybe green woodstain.

But I realise the stain will leak through to the other side a bit - not nice for my next door neigbour to have to look at. She is a very nice older lady, with no husband. Do I have a moral obligation to offer to paint her side too? I can't face it! (Just to be clear the fence belongs to us.)

It won't be worse than the replaced panels look though. She can always paint it.

I'd tell her though.

But it will look worse. It will go from a hotch-potch of orange and faded wood panels, to a hotch-potch of orange and faded wood with streaks and drips of green coming through any gaps. But this must happen any time someone paints a fence, surely? So is it considered bad etiquette not to paint the other side too?

It's perfectly normal just to paint your own side .

KippyVonKipperson · 08/02/2014 16:05

Just don't use excess paint on your brush when painting. If you do it carefully there won't be any drips

southeastastra · 08/02/2014 16:12

it's easy to paint without going through just be careful. my neighbour managed to get dark drips through a new fence a while back and i was mad, but they faded really quickly

FoxesRevenge · 08/02/2014 16:48

Wouldn't it be easier to just paint her side too. If she has her side painted won't it come through to your side especially if she uses a darker stain.

Helspopje · 08/02/2014 16:51

just dont use those power spray thingie.

my idiot ex neighbour did that to our brand new weather treated (so didn't need to be stained!!!) fence not long after we both moved into our newly built homes. The stain bled/splattered really badly on either side of each plank so the fence looked tigerstriped. To make it worse he chose that horrid orangey reddy brown.

duffus.

DH painted neighbours side last time we replaced the fence. But she was 95, deaf and was only just managing to stay in her own home as it was. Neither she nor her daughter needed the hassle of painting a fence. So it would depend on the circumstances really.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 09/02/2014 09:47

I'd paint it then you know both sides are protected. It could rot from neighbours side if not.

ZenNudist · 09/02/2014 10:33

We painted both sides 1) to protect it fully & 2) so neighbour didn't paint their side different colour.

It took ages
