Hi all. A friend of mine just called me. He's just been for an interview in London for City Angels for a first line IT helpdesk position paying £21k.

His skills are very old and out of date. A point they picked up on. But apparently....if he agrees to pay £500 for training followed by £99 for certification exams then they'll offer him the position and a 40 hour a week contract. However until he passes the certification, the company can change their minds at any time.

Has anyone heard of this sort of arrangement? Is it legit? Cos it sounds dodgy to me?

Sounds dodgy to me too. Can he get it in writing that he will have the job for sure after he jumps through their hoops?

Scam!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/02/2014 13:50

I've worked in recruitment - please tell your friend not to even consider it

If someone chooses to do pay-for training on their own initiative that's fair enough, but employers pay to train their own staff if necessary; anything else is a scam, pure and simple

Just visited their website. I wouldn't trust an agency that didn't know the difference between an employee and employer.

Just done a bit more googling and my spider sense was right. Definitely a scam. Honestly these people make me sick. They pray on those who are desperate to work and are probably in the least position to lose money.

21k in London for support? Way to low..

sooperdooper · 05/02/2014 15:49

Definitely sounds like a scam - good job you picked up on it, totally out of order for these companies to be preying on the fact people need work - could you report the company?

PumpkinPie2013 · 05/02/2014 16:32

Tell him not to touch it with a barge pole!

Sounds very dodgy!

Bubblegoose · 05/02/2014 16:35

Get him to request that the course fee be deducted from his first few pay packets!
