I saw a job advertised today for a 40s themed cafe that's in the town I live in. I adore the 40/50s, wear swing dressed daily, and go swing dancing.the advert said

"Looking for a weekend girl/boy to work in cafe Saturday and Sunday. Must be polite and caring to the elderly"

So I went into today to speak to manager. He said he wanted a teenager, not a 23 yo because he doesn't pay much. I said I'm not instrested in the pay, it's the getting out the house I want. He said he was worried I would let him down at weekends if kids are ill ect, I said my husband doesn't work weekends.

He said he would ring in an hour or so. That was at 11am, iv obviously not got the job. I'm gutted :(

Seriously, it sounds good but you don't want to work for a man who thinks like that.

AnyFuleKno · 02/02/2014 17:15

he said that? Angry

sounds like you had a lucky escape from a nobhead boss

I'd set up a competing themed café over the road and laugh in his face

Chottie · 02/02/2014 17:16

It's not over yet, you haven't heard either way so hang on in there. Fingers crossed :)

FloweryFeatureWall · 02/02/2014 17:20

Yeah, you really do not want to work there.

arabellarubberplant · 02/02/2014 17:22

Why did you tell him you had kids? Did he ask?

arabellarubberplant · 02/02/2014 17:25

(In reality, would dh have wanted you to erase any family time? Would you have been able to maintain that?) Weekend jobs whilst trying to maintain a relationship and the other party working m-f can be v hard work, particularly when the financial gain is hardly worthwhile.

I used to do it, mind. But not every weekend.

Start up your own 40s cafe in competition and blow him out of the water ;-)

ilovesooty · 02/02/2014 17:25

Idiot obviously isn't aware that age discrimination is illegal.

arabellarubberplant · 02/02/2014 17:25

Lol, rule know great minds think alike....

SeaSickSal · 02/02/2014 17:27

He wants to pay less than the minimum wage and I suspect won't treat his staff well.

If it's any consolation to you I came second in a interview this year for a job I really wanted and was absolutely gutted. In the end I got a better job with better times and I was sort of lucky.

Incidentally, I think you may have hit on something for yourself here. You love swing dancing, the clothes, you're really passionate about it. It really sounds like you would do fantastically well if you set up your own business on the same theme. Could you do something with clothes? Selling or dealing them or making them? Could you even set up your own restaurant or cafe or ask if you could set up a theme night within someone elses establishment once a month? Perhaps a place normally open in the day would let you open up in the evening once a month?

lol euphemia

he's taking the theme too far obviously

does he make customers produce a ration book?

Hissy · 02/02/2014 18:05

Bet he's looking at the caff as a dating source.

Yes to setting up a competing cafe!

Topaz25 · 02/02/2014 19:00

I can see why you're disappointed but it sounds like a lucky escape! I agree with others you should look at turning your interest into your own business!

redexpat · 02/02/2014 19:04

Sounds like he's still living in the 1940s.

RussianBlu · 02/02/2014 19:18

What a funny job advert. How does he know teenagers wont call in sick because they have a runny nose/stayed up too late the night before?

PumpkinPie2013 · 02/02/2014 19:48

Think you had a lucky escape tbh!!

I don't think a teenager will be more reliable than someone who is married/partnered and has children.

He's an idiot!
