To introduce a new law

That states that the dates on all receipts and invoices should be on the top right hand corner!

I am sure anyone who has had the pleasure of doing any sort of book work with receipts and invoices shares my pain of staring at a piece of paper trying to find the bloody date!! The price is clear enough, but the date - oh no! Its hidden away somewhere among a load of other figures.

This is fine when you have one or two things to log, but not when your builder DP hands you a bag of receipts in the last week of January and there are hundreds of the bloody things, all with dates in different places Hmm This must make book keepers and accountants work harder than it needs to be and im glad i only have to do DP's accounts.

Surely its not just me!

I second your new law. My boss gives me receipts to sort out in a bloody carrier bag some of them are months old some are from last week! Finding the date takes longer than everything else I do with the damn things.

ZillionChocolate · 29/01/2014 09:39

Yup.

My new law (for today) is that there should be consistent rules about what an online password must be. Either they all insist on non alphanumeric characters, or none of them. Either they all insist on upper and lower case letters, or none of them. Etc etc.

a law saying that only the HMRC can do anything that is as complicated as logging petrol and material receipts. It really should be a job for trained experts working for the HMRC so all receipts should be sent, complete with bedraggled tesco carrier bags and sweet wrappers by courier to the HMRC on the 29th January. Then they can put the bloody dates where they want up their backsides

As soon as any invoices come in, highlight relevant detail in a yellow highlighter (doesnt show on photocopier), and chuck in box/carrier bag/bin. Easy to spot detail when you return to it at the eleventh hour

LEMmingaround · 29/01/2014 09:50

Go away Ken, with your glaringly obvious solutions Wink, this would involve not actually being given the bag of receipts at the 11th hour and everyone knows this is what builders do! Its the law! i think a certain builder may be doing his own returns next year, oh yes

Get him a nail to put receipts/invoices on so they are at least in rough date order? Or any other very simple to use system (so they don't just go in the carrier bag).

LEMmingaround · 29/01/2014 10:03

Mines - believe me, i have tried! not the nail though - i might try that and tell him i'll make him sit on it if he doesn't buck his ideas up!

But you still have to find the actual date! and then some of them have the date by the american system - so 2014-27-11 Hmm Honestly, i reckon they do it on purpose and are laughing their socks off at us

yadnbu!

BlackeyedSusan · 29/01/2014 10:23

I will second it. as long as the time goes under the date.

Goldencity1 · 29/01/2014 10:24

How have you solved the "leaving the reciepts in your overalls pocket so they disintegrate in the rain" and "leaving them on the dashboard of the van mobile dustbin " so all the print fades off leaving them completley
illegible?

Am also currently cursing DH and promising to NOT leave this till the last minute next year [ha ha!]

LEMmingaround · 29/01/2014 10:39

Golden. Its the same every year and every year I say im not going to leave it.......
