a friend request from someone I don't recognise at all, but who has messaged me saying that she talks about me all the time and seems to know an awful lot about me. I know that she may have changed her surname (got married) but I can only think of two people I have ever known with the same first name, and I know both of their surnames. We have several mutual friends, most of whom go way back but I have very little contact with them, now just the occasional post. Is this normal, or quite weird?

Pretty weird....could you ask one of your mutual friends who it is? Think that's what I'd do

Befriend her. Check out her profile. Unfriend if necessary.

Hmm, quite weird but normal for FB! I've had all kinds of messages off people I don't know, I just ignore if I don't want to be 'friends' with them.

Reply to the message and say you don't recognize the and could they explain who they are.

The internet is a jungle. I always assume that this sort of message (in whatever medium) is from one facet of Vivacious Vera from Vladivostok - and ignore or delete them. Never upset or inconvenienced anyone yet.

Umm that's weird. Unless you are exceptionally bad at remembering names and she's someone you were best mates with at school or something. Still would be a bit odd to say she talks about you all the time though.

I would advise you to ignore but in all honesty if it was me I would probably add her, put her on a restricted viewing list and then quietly drop her somewhere down the line - but that's because I'm a people pleasing wimp.

No problem with ignoring friend requests from people I don't know/ don't want to be friends with but was by the fact she appeared to know me. I have messaged a mutual friend, but I think I might have placed her - if I'm right I spelled her first name wrong for years!

Mistaken identity? She thinks you're the BillySurname she knew from Brownies but you're not?

I had a friend request from someone I'd never met in the USA, saying she was so pleased to find me and couldn't wait to catch up. I'm a UK dweller, always have been. I messaged her saying I thought she had the wrong person and she replied that I had the exact same name (and it's quite unusual) as a childhood friend of hers that she had lost touch with. Weird coincidence. Maybe the same for you..? :)

Many people have a pretty good handle on the private lives of others - from random indiscretions and information publicly available about them. It's how scammers wangle their way in.

If you're happier knowing who she might be, that's good. Now ignore her.

It's the Devil in disguise. He hangs around a lot on Facebook. I keep warning everyone but do they listen?

Why don't you just ask her who she is? If you know her and want to, accept the friend request. If you don't know her, decline and block.

Seems pretty straightforward.
