Sorry if this is a boring thread but I need advice!

we live on outskirts of a city and as a result we are classed as 'rural' even though we are really not! As a result broadband providers like to charge a nice premium when you live in rural areas (I forget what its called) .

Anyway I cant get cheap broadband. They are all around £15-20 so no cheap sky broadband for a fiver for me! So I got plusnet for 14.99.

Anyway we realised when we got phone bill today (£100 for quarter) that we don't actually really use landline phone. The only person we phone from it is my mum around four times a week. We have free calls from mobiles so use them instead.

However we cant get rid of landline as we need to keep our broadband so BT have us pretty shafted and we cant cut costs anywhere else due to the area we live in! Aaarrghhhh.

have tried looking at virgin amd they dont serve my area. Any thoughts anyone? Just trying to lower my telephone/broadband bills whilst still keeping broadband and I can't do it!

Nope, and if you switch to any other provider you will find you speed slows down, and non stop problems,

we are very rural and there is no way round it, many have tried and failed, my neighbours have been through hell,

have you enquired when you will get fiber optics in your area?

Stressedtothehilt · 10/01/2014 20:30

Damn I thought would be the case :( them broadband dongle things are rubbish as well so won't use them. No I haven't I may do though amd see what they say. The housing estate is about ten years old now so hopefully will be soon!

We're rural too.

I phoned BT, told them I was off to Sky because they were cheaper so they gave me "new customer" rates.

As soon as I notice them put it up again, apparently it can only last 12 months, I shall do it again. They are bloody rip off merchants, and the broadband is so slow it meets itself coming back!

Stressedtothehilt · 10/01/2014 20:38

My broadbamd is actually with plusnet and the speed is good its just paying bt for my phone line I barely use I object to :)

You can change your ohone to plusnet though can't you? Its about £130/ yr if you pay in advance. Plus go via topcashback for some extra money off. We were very rural in our last house and had to pay about £5 extra for broadband as it was a BT exchange but the phone line was very competitive.

WhereMyMilk · 10/01/2014 20:41

They do it to us as well-Wankers-& you get stuck in a deal for 12 months as well. As I said before-wankers!

longtallsally2 · 10/01/2014 20:47

BTs home page offer a phone package at £141 per annum, if you pay annually with weekend calls free. That's a lot less than your £100 per quarter . . .

Stressedtothehilt · 10/01/2014 20:52

Whattttt?? How could I not know about that cheap package?!! I want it!

As well as the phone though the broadband also royally persists me off! I had sky broadband £5 for ages well happy with it -until I moved here. They told me I would have to pay £17 a month due to the area! I think its ludicrous! Over 200% increase madness

OP posts:
IneedAsockamnesty · 10/01/2014 20:56

Can't remember what the package is called but bt do one where you get free landline - landline calls, one is all the time another is after 7pm and weekends.

BoneyBackJefferson · 10/01/2014 21:30

PlusNet is BT

MisForMumNotMaid · 10/01/2014 21:46

Its owned by BT but its run separately isn't it? You can certainly play plusnet sales of against BT sales.
