AIBU to grumpy and ill when coming off depo?

My depo was due two days ago but I've been advised to come off it due to severe headaches. If the headaches go away, I can go back on it in three months.

I feel like crap already. I'm moody, hot and cold, craving chocolate, dizzy spells, and having pains on my left side that make me think I'm ovulating. OH has left cooked turkey in the fridge and it's making me want to vomit. My nipples are tingly (not unpleasant) and all I want to do is sleep. I've never come off it before so I don't know what to expect. All this and it was due just two days ago! We've been very careful so I'm unlikely to be pregnant. Is this normal?

It's unlikely to cause withdrawal symptoms 2 days after stopping, presuming your last injection was 12 weeks ago. This is because it will remain in your system for a total of 14 weeks, despite only being licensed for contraception for 12 weeks. I'd do a pregnancy test!

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/01/2014 17:24

That seems unlikely in two days... Surely depo doesn't 'drop off' that quickly. Can you ask your GP?

I think you have a virus. I have never felt like that when my depo has been two days overdue.

Thanks MN. Just feeling rubbish at the moment. Will maybe go back to doctor next week if symptons don't ease.

I was on Depo for years and I would always have my next injection at week 11 otherwise I would feel really ill if I went over that.

As soon as I had my next does I felt better again. I've now been off it completely for 5 months and I still feel terrible!!

TheGinLushMinion · 10/01/2014 22:22

I didn't feel like that, sorry.

Thanks Daisy, not just me then! Even staying off the wine tonight as feel too poorly.

I've had mine a few days after it was due before and didn't have those symptoms, the clinic nurse even told me there is a one week 'window' where it actually expires after 13 weeks but you are told to renew it after 12 weeks to be extra safe or something like that. Obviously I would not recommend anyone forgetting to get their shot like I did, I am just saying IME a few days delay does not produce these symptoms, so maybe check with your GP.

SpottyTeacakes · 11/01/2014 14:45

It's licensed for fourteen weeks everyone gets told twelve to allow for everyone who forgets.

I wonder if it's because you've been having it a while every twelve weeks? Either way I hope you feel better soon Thanks

When I come to a few days before the 12 weeks I feel a bit like I have a period but without the bleeding but nothing like what you have described just mildly PMT and get spotty. Even when I came off it before DS I didn't feel like you are.

I've had a rubbish time on depo. I'm three weeks past injection date and feel awful. Hormones everywhere, stressed, grumpy and angry. Have got the weird metallic taste as well and bad headaches. I am 100% not pregnant but feel rubbish!

You are not alone!
