I know I know

Just get over it ok. I am not there. And I cant spend all day gazing at Northern Lights and rolling about exploring mountains and fjords.

Life is shit wherever I live as I cannot escape myself. I get it.

I've always thought it looks beautiful and I'd like to go on holiday and see fjords and lakes, etc. dh has family over there but don't think they're in a pretty bit.

QuintessentialShadows · 10/01/2014 08:39

You are never far from a pretty bit!

LaurieFairyCake · 10/01/2014 08:42

It's not your fault. (I saw your last thread)

The world is full of endless possibilities, its no wonder we use wanderlust and exciting dreams of 'being somewhere else' to avoid having to stay 'right here'.

I've just moved house, it took a year of getting the last place ready for sale, packing half our stuff up to make it look uncluttered and then moving. It was incredibly hard work and half our stuff is still in a garage and we have builders in doing an extension.

Yesterday I was perusing flats in Brighton and houses in the Cotswolds Hmm

Mindfulness would help you - maybe download an app? As would setting yourself mini goals like joining a club/class and making friends as you feel a bit 'outside' at the moment.

{{hugs}} to you though Smile

Same at the Isle of Skye.

Remembers midges, 14 mile round trip for food, horizontal rain Wink

InaneNameChange · 10/01/2014 08:47

Did you go there a lot, OP? I've never seen the Northern Lights but they sound beautiful. I forget to even look at the stars most of the time! (All of us are standing in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars...)

I like the sound of Fredrikstad Fortress in the article. And the reindeer. I want to visit now!

QuintessentialShadows · 10/01/2014 09:36

I am just homesick.

OP posts:
SeaSickSal · 10/01/2014 10:27

I am desperate to go to Oslo.

SeaSickSal · 10/01/2014 10:27

Norway's not in the EU is it? I wonder if one can rock up Romanian stylee and just get a flat and benefits. I might do that.

QuintessentialShadows · 10/01/2014 10:45

Good luck with that! Grin

The "benefits office" may just point you in direction of the job center and a few private rentals, if you are lucky. People doing what you propose end up sleeping rough. Not great in sub zero temperatures.
If you want to move to Norway you need to be able to secure a job yourself, ie have a skill needed. If you are a nurse, GREAT! You just need to learn the language, and start from scratch (like I had to do when I came to the uk)

QuintessentialShadows · 10/01/2014 10:47

Actually, university is free, and offer Norwegian language courses to foreign students....

OP posts:
nvrgooglenkdShiaLaBoeuffTigga · 10/01/2014 10:49

YANBU, I'd move to Norway/Finland et al in a heart beat if the language wasn't so damn hard to learn.

SighsTiggaxx

QuintessentialShadows · 10/01/2014 10:50

It is not that difficult. I used to teach it to foreigners.

Just go! Grin

I loved my time working in Oslo. The cost of living is enough to put me off though. I've finally found somewhere in the uk that I enjoy living so am feeling happier about sticking where I am.
QS you will find your home soon too. x

nevergoogle · 10/01/2014 10:55

The language is easy peasy. I was doing my job in basic norwegian after 6 weeks.

Lolalocket · 10/01/2014 11:05

Oh it looks amazing. DH was just in Oslo last week on business. He was raving about it. After seeing this I am officially adding it to my list of countries i must visit. I think it will make the top three with Peru and Japan.

Birdsgottafly · 10/01/2014 11:14

It's my dream holiday, I just don't know anyone who wants to go.

I love reindeer (but not in a weird way) and the idea of seeing wild reindeer against a frozen landscape makes it worth every penny, as well as a trip to see the Northern Lights.

Birdsgottafly · 10/01/2014 11:16

Oh! So YABU, it was written to Me! (But I'll let you share).

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 10/01/2014 11:34

My DSIL is Norwegian and has frequently offered us use of her family's lakeside log cabin. Why oh why have I never been????????

I get so jealous when my DB puts amazing photos of the place on Facebook when they holiday there. Him blissfully fishing in their rowing boat on a flat lake surrounded by beautiful scenery or just paddling in the shallows. Envy

lookatmybutt · 10/01/2014 11:43

Oh, yes please. It's one of the places I'd love to go to but have never been - it's not even that far!

It's on my list along with Iceland (volcanos, elves, Icelandic) and Croatia (that national park looks like another world).

LOOK AT THIS OMG ISN'T IT GREAT!

It is a beautiful country, have been lucky enough to visit four times for work purposes and stayed in a different location each time, Oslo and three beautiful countryside places. The 24 hour daylight is incredible and brings a feeling of wellbeing, although the winter months I felt were bleak with very little, if any, daylight, candles everywhere during the day, etc. The air is so beautifully fresh and clean, just breathing makes you feel healthier than anywhere I've been in the UK.

SeaSickSal · 10/01/2014 12:12

I wasn't actually going to do it. Actually I've had a look and my husband's career has various offshore options if he does a few courses and they want English speakers too...

Devondarling · 10/01/2014 12:23
lots of lovely scenery.
QuintessentialShadows · 10/01/2014 13:11

I loved Troll hunter!
