To think cleaning teeth is private?

I don't like watching people brush their teeth. To me it's something to be done in private, am I being unreasonable?

Don't go camping.

I don't understand. Isn't this normally done in the bathroom?

I do think it's private, I have a compulsion where I have to gag myself three times before I'm done and anyone would think I was being sick. I'm not sure if I'm the only one.

FunkyBoldRibena · 04/01/2014 17:53

Close your eyes then?

Bakerof3pudsxx · 04/01/2014 17:53

I don't feel it's a private thing no

I wouldn't mind people seeing

Justforlaughs · 04/01/2014 17:53

I used to feel like this, now I'm just relieved if I get left in peace to use the toilet! Grin

ikeaismylocal · 04/01/2014 17:53

I feel the same!

It really anoys me if someone comes and sits in the same room as me brushing their teeth, they obviously can't add anything to the conversation, so what do they expect me to do, just talk at them!

ISeeYouShiverWithAntici · 04/01/2014 17:54

Not really thought about it, tbh.
Is it because of the spitting?

JinglingRexManningDay · 04/01/2014 17:55

I do mine whilst buttoning coats and tying shoes. I also go to the toilet with a three year old giving a commentary. No such thing as privacy in my house.

BitchyFestiveFace · 04/01/2014 17:56

I don't think it is or isn't private, just one of those things where we all have an individual preference. I don't mind seeing other people brush their teeth but I am uncomfortable doing mine in front of others. I just feel all, I don't know, undignified or something Xmas Grin I genuinely don't know what it is, but if DP comes in while I'm brushing my teeth I turn my back.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 04/01/2014 17:56

Yabu. It's just teeth cleaning.

TheGreatHunt · 04/01/2014 17:56

Crowler! I do that too (brushing my tongue though)

littlewhitebag · 04/01/2014 17:57

I wander around as i brush my teeth. I am not bothered if i am seen or if i see others brushing their teeth. Especially not if they are my family. Private brushing would be awkward when you have 4 sharing a room on holiday.

MsVelvet · 04/01/2014 17:57

Someone seeing me brush my teeth dos not bother me in the slightest, not sure why it would for anyone, guess it's different for different people :/

Iheartkfckrushums · 04/01/2014 17:57

Yeh the spitting and if there's any 'dribble'!

I don't like other people doing it in front of me, and I won't do it in front of others Grin

Eh, it doesn't bother me at all. I brush my teeth with the bathroom door open all the time. The cats wander in as and when, and my flatmate, his boyfriend and my DP have to walk past to get to their respective rooms or the kitchen.

LyndaCartersBigPants · 04/01/2014 18:01

DP and I often brush our teeth in the same room, but he gets embarrassed if his gums bleed. He usually stands behind me and smiles at me over my shoulder in the mirror while were brushing, then I wander off and spit in the other bathroom!

sillymillyb · 04/01/2014 18:02

It doesn't bother me in slightest usually, but when ex dp moved in, I remember feeling it was really intimate when we brushed teeth together before bed. Not sure why! I usually don't care who sees me!

carovioletfizz · 04/01/2014 18:02

I cannot bear it when people walk round the house brushing their teeth, all that foamy minty froth, yuck!

Cocolepew · 04/01/2014 18:03

I hate it. I hate even hearing someone brush their teeth.
Toothpaste ads give me the rage.

HandsOffMyGazBaz · 04/01/2014 18:05

Jesus crowler I do that!! I thought it was just me! !!

Ilovexmastime · 04/01/2014 18:06

I couldn't care less if someone saw me cleaning my teeth or vice versa.

CasperGutman · 04/01/2014 18:06

YABU, but only a little bit, and it's a pretty harmless sort of unreasonableness. A family friend also can't stand being around other people when he/they are cleaning teeth.

littlemisssarcastic · 04/01/2014 18:08

YANBU. I don't understand why anyone would want to be in the bathroom while I am cleaning my teeth. It's not like we can have a conversation is it?
Or would they come in just to blankly stare at me until I had finished? Confused

I really don't see the point of anyone else being there while I am cleaning my teeth.

If they want to use the bathroom, surely either they or I can wait until the bathroom is free?

What annoys me is when I mention I'm just going to clean my teeth, shortly followed by the sound of my brush buzzing along and at this point, the other person will decide it's now a really good time to ask me not very important questions, and repeat and repeat whilst I make Mmmm noises which translated is 'Wait a minute.' with my mouth closed.

More annoying than this is anyone, including DD who comes into bathroom whilst I am cleaning my teeth only to stand there silently staring at my every move.
Why????

After cleaning, I say 'Why do you talk to me/stare at me while I am cleaning my teeth? I can't talk back to reply to your questions can I?'

It still happens at least 3 days a week though. Angry

littlemisssarcastic · 04/01/2014 18:13

Actually, the sight or sound of someone else cleaning their teeth makes me feel a bit sick, so that may have something to do with it.
All that foamy bubbly stuff dripping off their teeth and babies or children who chew the plastic bristles on toothbrushes. It goes right through me. Ewwwwww!!!

And the thought of hearing or seeing someone splatting their mouthful of spit into the basin makes me feel ill too. Yuk!!
