Aibu to make a chocolate cake?

As a break from the usual fluffy trivia of aibu I have a serious question.

My 9 mo DTs christening is in 2 weeks.
I will be making the cake and I'm toying with making a chocolate cake covered in white choc icing, (to be served for pudding) rather than The traditional fruit cake.
I like fruit cake, but I know lots of ppl don't and, well, are we all a bit sick of it? (I still have half a Christmas cake left)
Do you think ppl will mind? Am I expected to serve fruit cake?

And no, I don't have anything more important to think about ATM Wink

I hate fruit cake. Chocolate always for me. What time do you want me there?

PetShopGirl · 04/01/2014 08:18

I had chocolate cake for my wedding, yum! You just have to make it much closer to the event as it can't hang around too long.

superbagpuss · 04/01/2014 08:20

we had a m&s sponge cake from the birthday range for our DC christening and I didn't think twice about it

it appears I am the only person in the world that likes fruit cake and we had them too long after our marriage to use a layer of wedding cake Sad.

You should make chocolate cake but getting it perfect is actually quite hard. I think you should start daily practice runs and courier them to me so I can quality check them for you. I'll pm you my address :o

Go for it! My DDs christening was a few weeks ago & her godfather is a chef so he made her cake & was given strict instructions not to make it a fruit cake!! I can't stand fruit cake!! I would have loved chocolate but we decided on a kinda Victoria sandwich cake instead as it kept better & iced easier!
You'll be the one taking home the leftovers ( if there are any!) so go with what you want!!

Captainbarnacles1101 · 04/01/2014 08:21

At Ds 2 christening I had a carrot cake decorated with the usual christening garb and then for Ds3 we had chocolate fudge with white choc ganache inside and again decorated with the christening garb. Yum yum.

Ooh yes chocolate cake with choc icing and white fondant is the best cake in the world!
I make them all the time when doing cake orders and they always go down well!

Felicityfancypants · 04/01/2014 08:30

sugarbagpuss same here. Wedding cake long gone.

Thanks.
I think I'll go for chocolate.

White chocolate icing is an abomination.

Chocolate cake is perfectly fine though and I reckon most people will be delighted. Who even likes fruitcake? Apart from my mum obviously.

Just don't put white chocolate icing on it. Please.

Felicityfancypants · 04/01/2014 08:36

Sorry grumpla
It needs the white choc icing for decor purposes.

We had a sponge fake with jam and butter cream filling for our children's christenings.
I hate white chocolate, lots of people do as it's so incredibly sugary and artificial tasting. But I would love a chocolate cake with milk chocolate frosting mmmmmmm.

3bunnies · 04/01/2014 08:43

Just make sure that you take any precious white clothes off them before letting them loose on it!

Lesshastemorespeed · 04/01/2014 08:50

I love fruit cake, but realize I'm in the minority and didn't want to be left with loads of it.

Had a carrot cake for dd christening and choc cake for our wedding. ds christening cake was vanilla sponge as lots of kids came to that.

Had them all made at a lovely shop as my cakemaking skills are a bit pants to say the least. they looked and tasted great and were a good source of conversation.

Lesshastemorespeed · 04/01/2014 08:51

and we had white choc icing on the wedding cake.

was nice. served up to our guests as dessert with fruit coulis, seemed to go down ok.

I think chocolate cake is fine but ....... in the past I have made an almond and apricot fruit cake. It is dense and decoratable like a traditional fruit cake but is lighter like a sponge. The recipe is on the BBC good food website.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 04/01/2014 12:00

I've made choc cake with white choc sugarpaste. It was nice IMHO.
I think there are different types. But I haven't been able to get the renshaw Belgian choc one this winter. I think it's discontinued.
