To cancel DS's birthday celebrations

DS will be 6 on Sunday and was due to have a family lunch out followed by bowling party with his friends. Today he came out with chicken pox. Not many spots and he's fine in himself. But I assumed quarantine was all part of the deal so we've cancelled the meal out and postponed his party for a couple of weeks. We might have one or two friends over (if they want to and he is up to it) on the day, but otherwise we will have a 'party' at home just us.

MIL thinks I am being unfair and unnecessarily ruining his birthday. 'He is fine and has no spots on his face so no one would know' so there is no reason to keep him in. He is devastated and doesn't want to stay home, but surely that's not a good reason to willingly expose others?

YANBU

Until his spots have dried and crusted he should be kept away from others, especially those at risk.

Yanbu

keep him home. He might well feel really crap by then.

Plus chicken pox can be devastating to those with a compromised immune system

YADNBU, ignore your MIL. He may only have a few spots today but they gain spots over the first few days. One of mine had hundreds but was generally in fine form, she was only 14 months so couldn't say herself.

I have done chicken pox 4 times yes it is always an inconvenience but I have always kept them home till last one crusted over.

Too big a risk for pregnant people and people with weakened immunities.

Make his family birthday at home special then have his party in a couple of weeks.

MIL is being ignorant and irresponsible. Stick to your guns. He'll get over it (the postponed party I mean....well, the chickenpox too!)

Vajazzler · 03/01/2014 23:45

Can you not just postpone it til the weekend after?

ohfourfoxache · 03/01/2014 23:45

Yanbu -at all.

Thanks for confirming my thinking! We will have a lovely day at home - am going to try to sell it to him as getting an extra birthday!
