I think I've fractured my knee

Happened Sunday night and in a lot of pain. Spent all yesterday doped up on tramadol but still hurts. It's swollen and hot and my knee cap feels like it's in 3 pieces. Wibu unreasonable to go to a and e? I know it's not exactly life threatening. Or would normal protocol be doctor first?

go to a and e. It's an injury that is affecting your mobility and is not improving.

Get someone else to drive you.

lifelorn · 31/12/2013 13:11

I suggest A&E they have the facilities for x ray etc. If you go to the GP he will probably examine it and tell you to go to A&E. It could be damage to the cartilage and will still require hospital treatment. If you are one of the lucky people with access to a walk in clinic, that would also be better than a GP.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 31/12/2013 13:14

Go to A&E, although they didn't see my knee fracture until I had a (private) MRI scan a couple of weeks later. Took ages to get better properly (like 18 months) but it did.

goshhhhhh · 31/12/2013 13:16

Go to a&e. The GP will probably send you there anyway.Hope you r ok.

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 31/12/2013 13:20

You are sat at home with a hot swollen knee and a kneecap in 3 pieces and you are asking this question ?

What next ?

"Dear all, I have fractured my skull and I have brains coming out of my ears. Should I wait until monday to see the gp or call NHS direct now ?"

whois · 31/12/2013 13:20

Ouch! Go to A&E but call a taxi not an ambulance. You need an X-ray and your Gp can't do that.

northcountrygirl · 31/12/2013 13:34

Yeah I suppose it does sound a bit lame. My thinking behind going to gp first is that if I did that I'd get a proper appointment for an xray rather than waiting 8 hours.

Plus it's not really an emergency since it happened 2 days ago. And I'm due at my grandma's in an hour. And even a fractured skull with brain leakage would not be avalid reason to not go and eat the fucking salmon sandwiches that will have been prepared hours ago.

gamerchick · 31/12/2013 13:38

You should really go now. The gp will just send you and I've never heard of getting an immediate appointment for an xray.

Longdistance · 31/12/2013 13:48

If it happened two days ago, you're probably doing damage to the break by not getting it seen to.

Go get your butt to a&e. No point going to the docs, as you need an X-Ray ASAP, and possibly a cast, and crutches.

Hawkmoth · 31/12/2013 13:50

A is for accident!

Hope you're ok OP, sounds shit. My FIL broke his knee, was a bad do.

tinytalker · 31/12/2013 14:03

Do you have a walk-in small/minor injuries clinic near you? We have one at our hospital and they can do X-rays. Waiting times are a fraction of what A&E would be. Google to see if there is one.

tinytalker · 31/12/2013 14:07

You might have torn your cruciate ligaments or meniscus, which will only show up on an MRI. I did this when skiing but only went to GPs 3 weeks later when I still couldn't walk and my knee looked like an elephant's! If you do get an x-ray and it shows nothing still go to GP. I had to have an operation in the end :(

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 31/12/2013 14:09

Poor you. Tbh,, a+e sounds preferable to the sandwiches...

Gaviguzzler · 31/12/2013 14:18

Yes. go! I have in the last year broken my foot and my ankle, both times I braved it at home until it got too bad and I then had to go and get them looked at. I had caused further damage in that time I spent trying to hobble around and both took longer to heal as a consequence.

PedlarsSpanner · 31/12/2013 14:18

yes please go to a and e

the joint needs stabilising whilst the damage is assessed and corrective course decided

trammies, though marvellous, will quite possible mask pain and allow you more movement than you ought to perform, further injuring the joint

I can't think why you wouldn't go to a and e, you've had at leasta whole day to arrange child-wranglers if that's what's making you cavil at the prospect

PedlarsSpanner · 31/12/2013 14:20

oh gosh, sorry at going all italiana and shuddupayaface in my post Blush

Theodorous · 31/12/2013 15:19

Taking trauma doll for an un diagnosed condition is quite silly. Just another sad indicator of how shit the system is that people are too scared to use it. Most of the people costing money tonight will be drunken twats anyway. Get there fast before they start fighting and falling over.

Theodorous · 31/12/2013 15:19

Tramadol obviously

comedycentral · 31/12/2013 15:57

Did you go? Or are you off your tits on tramadol at grandmas? Hope you are OK.

northcountrygirl · 31/12/2013 16:35

Just at a and e now. I think I will try and get more tramadol for future visits to grandma's though. Well all relatives really. And the sandwiches were from yesterday's cancelled visit - I'm convinced!
